Equations of Circles

Before you start, make sure you know: Distance between two points (Geometry)
Before you start, make sure you know: Algebraic Identities (Math 7)

Your phone drops its signal once you are more than 6 miles from a cell tower. On a map where the tower sits at the origin and each unit is 1 mile, your cabin is 4 miles east and 5 miles north of the tower. Do you get service? Circles answer this kind of question: once a circle has an equation, you can test points, lines, and other circles with algebra.

Standard Form

A circle is the set of all points in a plane that are the same distance from one fixed point. That fixed point is the center $C(h, k)$, and the distance is the radius $r$.

A circle in the coordinate plane with center C(h, k), radius r, and a point P(x, y) on it. C(h, k) P(x, y) r

Why does it work? The distance from $P(x, y)$ to $C(h, k)$ is $\sqrt{(x-h)^2+(y-k)^2}$. Setting that equal to $r$ and squaring removes the square root.

Is a point inside, on, or outside?

Compare the point's squared distance from the center with $r^2$. Plug $(x, y)$ into $(x-h)^2+(y-k)^2$:

  • result $< r^2$: the point is inside the circle,

  • result $= r^2$: the point is on the circle,

  • result $> r^2$: the point is outside the circle.

Back to the start: the cabin is $\sqrt{41}\approx 6.4$ miles from the tower, just past the 6-mile limit.

General Form and Completing the Square

If you multiply out the squares in standard form, the parentheses disappear:

Why? Expanding gives $x^2-2hx+h^2+y^2-2ky+k^2-r^2=0$. Matching terms with $x^2+y^2+Dx+Ey+F=0$ gives the values above.

Diagram showing that expanding turns the standard form of a circle into the general form, and completing the square goes back. (x−h)² + (y−k)² = r² expand complete the square x² + y² + Dx + Ey + F = 0

To go the other way, complete the square in $x$ and in $y$. Add $\left(\tfrac{\text{coefficient}}{2}\right)^2$ to both sides for each variable.

Circles Through Points or with a Center Condition

Sometimes you are not given the center. Two strategies work.

Strategy 1: three points. Plug each point into $x^2+y^2+Dx+Ey+F=0$. You get three linear equations in $D$, $E$, $F$. Solve them, then complete the square. This is also how you find the circumscribed circle of a triangle: the circle through its three vertices. If the vertices are not given, find them first by intersecting the sides.

Strategy 2: center on a line. Call the center $(h, k)$ and use the line to write $k$ in terms of $h$. The center is equally far from any two points of the circle, so set those two squared distances equal and solve.

A Line and a Circle

A line and a circle can have two common points (secant), exactly one (tangent), or none (exterior).

A circle with a secant line, a tangent line, and an exterior line, labeled by the distance d from the center to the line compared with the radius r. r d < r: secant d = r: tangent d > r: exterior

There are two ways to decide, and both are worth knowing.

Method 1: substitute. Solve the line for $y$ (or $x$) and plug it into the circle. You get a quadratic. Its discriminant tells you the number of solutions: $\Delta>0$ means secant, $\Delta=0$ means tangent, $\Delta<0$ means exterior. Its solutions give the intersection points.

Method 2: compare distances. Find the distance $d$ from the center to the line and compare it with $r$.

Tangent Lines from Other Conditions

Often you are not given the point of tangency. Instead you get a point outside the circle, a direction (parallel to a given line), or a line with an unknown parameter. In all three cases, use the same idea: the distance from the center to the tangent line equals $r$.

  • From an external point: write a line through the point with unknown slope $m$, then set distance $=r$. There are two tangent lines. If the point is on the circle there is one, and if it is inside there are none.

  • Parallel to a given line: a line parallel to $Ax+By+C_0=0$ has the form $Ax+By+c=0$ with the same $A$ and $B$. Set distance $=r$ and solve for $c$.

  • A family with parameter $k$: set distance $=r$ (or set the discriminant of the substituted quadratic equal to $0$) and solve for $k$.

Two Circles

Two circles are related by two numbers: the distance $d$ between their centers, and their radii $r_1$ and $r_2$.

Five positions of two circles: apart, externally tangent, intersecting at two points, internally tangent, and one inside the other. d > r₁ + r₂ apart d = r₁ + r₂ tangent |r₁−r₂| < d < r₁+r₂ 2 points d = |r₁ − r₂| tangent d < |r₁ − r₂| nested

To find centers and radii, put each equation in standard form first (complete the square if needed).

When two circles intersect, subtract their equations (both written in general form). The $x^2$ and $y^2$ terms cancel and you get a line through the intersection points. Some problems call this line the radical axis. Substitute it into either circle to find the points.
