Intercepts, Sign, and Asymptotes of Rational Functions

Before you start, make sure you know: Algebraic fractions (Algebra 1)

Emma runs a food truck. Each day costs her $\$400$ in fixed costs plus $\$3$ for every meal she makes, so her average cost per meal after selling $n$ meals is $A(n)=\dfrac{3n+400}{n}$. What happens to $A$ if she sells only a few meals? What if she sells thousands? Three questions answer this and many others about rational functions: where does the graph cross the axes, where is it positive or negative, and where does it blow up or level off?

Intercepts

The y-intercept is where the graph crosses the y-axis, so $x=0$. The x-intercepts are where the graph crosses the x-axis, so $f(x)=0$.

Sign Analysis

When is $f(x)>0$ and when is $f(x)<0$? A rational function can only change sign at an $x$-value where the numerator is zero (it crosses the x-axis) or where the denominator is zero (it jumps across a forbidden value). Call these the critical values. Between two consecutive critical values, the sign stays the same.

Number line split into three intervals by the critical values -1 and 4, with signs positive, negative, positive. −1 4 + − + x < −1f > 0 −1 < x < 4f < 0 x > 4f > 0

The figure shows the sign chart of $f(x)=\dfrac{x+1}{x-4}$. The filled dot at $-1$ is a zero. The open dot at $4$ is excluded from the domain.

Vertical Asymptotes and Holes

A vertical asymptote is a vertical line the graph gets closer and closer to while it shoots up or down without bound. It happens at a value that makes the denominator zero.

A curve with a vertical dashed line x = a: the left branch plunges downward and the right branch rises upward along the line. x = a f(x) → −∞ as x → a⁻ f(x) → +∞ as x → a⁺

Horizontal Asymptotes

What does a rational function do for very large $|x|$? The terms with the highest power of $x$ take over, and the lower-power terms become negligible. So we only need to compare the degrees of $P$ and $Q$.

Now try changing the leading coefficient and watch where the graph levels off.

Slant Asymptotes

If the numerator is exactly one degree higher than the denominator, the graph does not level off. It follows a slanted line. This is called a slant (or oblique) asymptote.

Reading a Graph

Sometimes you are given the graph and must find the formula. Read the asymptotes (dashed lines), the intercepts, and then match them to the algebra.

Finding Parameters

Many problems give you the behavior of a function and ask for unknown coefficients. Translate each fact into an equation:

  • vertical asymptote at $x=x_0$ means the denominator is $0$ at $x_0$ (and the numerator is not);

  • horizontal asymptote $y=L$ means the ratio of leading coefficients is $L$;

  • slant asymptote $y=mx+b$ means the quotient of the division is $mx+b$;

  • crossing the x-axis at $x_0$ means the numerator is $0$ at $x_0$.

  2. Find the intercepts.

  3. Make a sign chart.

  4. Find vertical asymptotes, then horizontal or slant asymptotes.

  5. If asked, compare the curve with the asymptote using $f(x)-(\text{asymptote})$.

Rational Models in Context

In applications the variable usually has a restricted domain (time $t\geq0$, price above $0$), and each feature has a meaning:

  • the y-intercept (at $t=0$) is the starting value;

  • a zero of the function is when the quantity vanishes;

  • the sign says whether the quantity is positive, negative, growing, or declining within the allowed domain;

  • the horizontal asymptote is the long-term value.

Summary

Back to Emma's food truck: $A(n)=\dfrac{3n+400}{n}=3+\dfrac{400}{n}$. The denominator is zero at $n=0$, so there is a vertical asymptote there. If she sells just a few meals, the average cost per meal is huge. As $n$ grows, $\frac{400}{n}\to0$, so the horizontal asymptote $y=3$ says her average cost approaches $\$3$ per meal and never drops below it.
