Aaliyah spends $\frac{1}{4}$ of her birthday money on a video game. Then she spends $\frac{2}{3}$ of what is left on snacks. What fraction of her money is still in her wallet? To answer it you need to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions with confidence, even when negatives show up.

Simplifying fractions

Every answer in this page should be in simplest form (also called lowest terms): the numerator and denominator have no common factor except 1. Some problems say irreducible fraction. It means exactly the same thing.

Order of operations with fractions

Fractions follow the same order of operations as whole numbers.

Four levels showing the order of operations: parentheses, exponents and roots, multiply and divide, add and subtract. 1. Parentheses, brackets 2. Exponents and roots 3. × and ÷ (left to right) 4. + and − (left to right)

You may know this as PEMDAS. Remember that multiplication and division share a level, and so do addition and subtraction. Work them left to right. With nested brackets, start with the innermost ones. A long fraction bar also acts like parentheses: do the top and the bottom first, then divide.

Decimals and fractions together

Sometimes a problem mixes decimals and fractions. The safest plan is to turn every decimal into a fraction and work only with fractions.

Subtracting x from ten times x cancels the repeating part and gives nine x equals four. 10x = 4.4444… − x = 0.4444… 9x = 4 x = 4/9 the repeating part is the same, so subtracting makes it vanish So 0.4444… = 4/9

"Fraction of the remainder" problems

When a problem says a fraction of what is left, that fraction applies to the remainder, not to the whole.

Bar model: one fourth spent on a game, two thirds of the rest spent on snacks, one fourth left. whole = 1 game 1/4 2/3 of the rest left: 1/4 the rest: 3/4

Back to the beginning: Aaliyah still has $\frac{1}{4}$ of her birthday money. The snack fraction $\frac{2}{3}$ looked big, but it was a fraction of only $\frac{3}{4}$ of the money.

Finding the whole

Sometimes you know what is left, and you must find the original amount. Work out what fraction of the whole the known amount is, then divide.

Bar model: shoes one fourth, ticket one fourth, left one half which equals 40 dollars. whole pay = ? shoes 1/4 ticket 1/4 left 1/2 = 40 dollars 1/2 of the pay is 40 dollars, so the pay is 2 × 40 = 80 dollars

When the unknown total also appears inside the amount that changes, call it $T$ and write an equation. Express each part of the problem in terms of $T$, then solve with inverse operations.

Mixtures: take some out, put some in

In a mixture problem, track one ingredient at a time. When you remove some of the mixture, you remove the same fraction of each ingredient. If you pour in a pure ingredient to replace it, the total amount does not change.
