Problem Solving with Integers

Before you start, make sure you know: Operations with integers (Math 6)
Before you start, make sure you know: Concept (Math 6)

In a video game you start a round with $20$ points. Each trap you hit costs $15$ points, and you hit $3$ traps. What is your score? You already know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers. The hard part of a word problem is almost never the arithmetic. It's turning the story into numbers with the correct signs. Let's practice that.

One-step problems

Every story has a reference point, which is the "zero" of the situation: sea level, the ground floor, a bank balance of $\$0$, a temperature of $0$ degrees. Things above it, gained, or deposited are positive. Things below it, lost, or owed are negative.

Vertical diagram of a scuba diver starting at 20 feet below sea level and descending 8 more feet to 28 feet below sea level. sea level (0) −20 ft 8 ft deeper −28 ft

The words in a problem tell you the sign:

Positive (+) Negative (−)
rose, climbed, gained, earned, deposit, above sea level, goals scored dropped, fell, lost, spent, withdrawal, below sea level, goals allowed

Some problems give temperatures in °C and others in °F. The math is exactly the same, so just keep the unit that the problem uses.

Multi-step problems

When there are several moves in a row, write down the position after each move. Don't try to do it all in your head.

Path of an elevator that starts at level −3, goes up 7 to level 4, down 4 to level 0, and up 2 to level 2. level −3 → +7 → −4 → +2 0 −3402 +7−4+2

In these problems, some numbers are positions (where you are) and some are changes (how far you move). A position is a starting point. A change is added to or subtracted from it.

You can also write everything as one sum: $1 + (-3) + 6 + (-2) = 2$. You get the same answer either way.

An underwater research station has its command center on level $0$ (at sea level). It has residential floors going up (positive) and laboratory floors going down (negative). A researcher leaves their cabin on floor $+3$, goes down $8$ floors to collect some samples, then goes up $5$ floors to analyze them, and finally goes down another $4$ floors to store them in the security vault.

  1. On which floor is the security vault located?

  2. If each floor is $4$ feet high, at what depth (in feet) relative to sea level is the researcher at the end of their trip?

Distances and differences

Many problems ask "how far apart are they?" The distance between two integers $a$ and $b$ is $|a - b|$, the absolute value of their difference.

Vertical diagram with an eagle at 120 feet above sea level and a dolphin at 30 feet below, showing a distance of 150 feet between them. sea level (0) +120 ft −30 ft distance = 150 ft

Why does this work? The number line makes it clear. If the two numbers are on opposite sides of $0$, you add their distances from $0$. If they are on the same side, you take the difference. Subtracting and taking the absolute value does both automatically.

Opposites are the same distance from $0$ on opposite sides. For example, $+18$ and $-18$ are $18 + 18 = 36$ apart.

Drag the points and watch how far apart they are. Try putting both on the same side of $0$.

Net change vs. total distance traveled

Sometimes a problem asks where something ends up, and sometimes it asks how far it traveled. These are different.

Timelines: BC and AD

A timeline is a number line. Years AD are positive, years BC are negative, and the reference point is year $0$. To find how long something lasted, subtract: later year minus earlier year.

Timeline from 300 BC to 150 AD with year 0 marked, showing a span of 450 years. 0 300 BC 150 AD 150 − (−300) = 450 years

If both dates are BC, the later one is the number closer to zero. From $500$ BC to $300$ BC: $-300 - (-500) = 200$ years.

Rates of change

When something changes by a fixed amount each time (every hour, every round, every item), multiply the change per time by the number of times. Keep the sign of the change: a drop is negative.

Line graph of a temperature falling 4 degrees every hour from 12 degrees to −12 degrees over 6 hours. 12°8°4°0°−4°−8°−12° 0123456 hours

The graph shows the idea: each hour the temperature changes by $-4$, so after $6$ hours it has changed by $6 \cdot (-4) = -24$.

Sometimes you know where you start and where you finish and need to find how many steps it takes. Divide the total change by the change per step.

Gains and losses in one expression

Scores, bank balances, and goal differences all work the same way. Each kind of event has its own signed value, and you multiply it by how many times it happened. Then you add everything, remembering that multiplication comes before addition.

Three cards showing treasure chests worth 1500 points, enemy hits worth −320 points, and power-ups worth 250 points, combined into a total of 1,430 points. chests5 · (+300)1500 hits4 · (−80)−320 power-ups10 · (+25)250 1500 − 320 + 250 = 1,430

For soccer, the goal difference is goals scored minus goals allowed. A $4$–$1$ win changes it by $+3$, a $0$–$3$ loss changes it by $-3$, and a draw changes it by $0$. Add each game's change to the team's current goal difference.

Longer problems: plan first

Longer problems may hide a number you need to find first, or ask for something like "break even" or "total money moved." Slow down and plan.

  • Break even means the final total is $0$. Add everything you have so far, then find the amount that brings the total back to $0$. That amount is the opposite of what you have.

  • Total money moved means adding the absolute values of every deposit and every expense. The net change is the sum with signs. They are different, just like net change and total distance.

  • A hidden count sometimes comes from a relationship in the story. If a team won $4$ times as many games as it lost and played $10$ games with no draws, then the games split into $4 + 1 = 5$ equal parts. Each part is $2$ games, so it lost $2$ and won $8$. Find the counts first, then build the expression.
