Operations with Polynomials
In a strategy video game you have two loot chests. The first holds $P(x) = 5x^2 + 3x - 4$ items and the second holds $Q(x) = 2x^2 - 5x + 8$ items, where $x$ is the rarity level. How many items do you have in total? By the end of this page you will know how to find out.
Parts of a Polynomial
A polynomial is a sum of terms like $4x^3$, $-6x^2$, $x$ and $-9$. Each term is a monomial: a number times a variable raised to a whole-number power. A polynomial with two terms is a binomial, and one with three terms is a trinomial.
We usually write polynomials in standard form, with the powers of $x$ going from highest to lowest.
-
The degree is the highest exponent that actually appears (with a nonzero coefficient).
-
The leading coefficient is the coefficient of the term with the highest power.
-
The constant term is the term with no variable.
Evaluating a polynomial
To evaluate $P(x)$ at a number, substitute that number for $x$ and follow the order of operations. Put the number in parentheses when you plug it in.

Adding Polynomials
To add polynomials, combine like terms: terms with the same variable and the same exponent. It helps to line them up in columns, just like adding multi-digit numbers.
That answers the chest question: $P(x) + Q(x) = 7x^2 - 2x + 4$ items.
Adding polynomials also gives perimeters. The perimeter is the sum of all the side lengths.

In a video game store, the inventory of three different categories is expressed by the following polynomials, where $x$ represents the number of new releases this month:
-
Action: $A(x) = 3x^2 + 5x - 8$

Subtracting Polynomials
Subtracting a polynomial means adding its opposite. The minus sign in front of the parentheses changes the sign of every term inside.
$$(15x^2 + 2x) - (10x^2 - 4x + 100) = 15x^2 + 2x - 10x^2 + 4x - 100 = 5x^2 + 6x - 100$$Multiples of polynomials and missing polynomials
A number in front of a polynomial is distributed first. For $3A - 2B$ with $A = x^2 + 2x$ and $B = x^2 - x$:
$$3(x^2 + 2x) - 2(x^2 - x) = 3x^2 + 6x - 2x^2 + 2x = x^2 + 8x$$Since $-2 \cdot (-x) = +2x$, the sign changed.
To find a missing polynomial, use inverse operations, just like in a one-step equation. If $(x^2 + 3x) + Q(x) = 2x^2 + x + 5$, then subtract $x^2 + 3x$ from both sides:
$$Q(x) = (2x^2 + x + 5) - (x^2 + 3x) = x^2 - 2x + 5$$To organize an e-sports event, a company uses the expression $G(x) = 10x^2 - 4x + 100$ to calculate its expenses and $I(x) = 15x^2 + 2x$ to calculate its revenue (where…

Find the polynomial that represents the net profit, knowing that profit is the difference between revenue and expenses: $I(x) - G(x)$.

Multiplying a Monomial by a Polynomial
Use the distributive property: the monomial multiplies each term of the polynomial. For each product, multiply the coefficients and add the exponents of the same variable.

Multiplying Two Polynomials
Now every term of the first polynomial multiplies every term of the second. An area model shows why:
For two binomials, some teachers use the word FOIL (First, Outer, Inner, Last) to remember the four products. FOIL is just the distributive property, and it only works for two binomials. The "every term times every term" rule works for any size.

Special Products
Some products come up so often that it pays to know their pattern. Multiplying out $(a + b)^2$ gives $(a + b)(a + b) = a^2 + ab + ab + b^2$.
Some problems call these algebraic identities. They are the same patterns. The middle term $2ab$ is the two matching rectangles in the picture. In the sum-and-difference product, $+ab$ and $-ab$ cancel, so there is no middle term.

Factoring Out the Greatest Common Factor
Factoring out the greatest common factor (GCF) is the distributive property in reverse. If every term shares a factor, pull it outside and leave a polynomial in parentheses.
$$4x^2 + 8x = 4x(x + 2)$$To find the GCF, take the GCF of the coefficients and each variable that appears in every term, with its smallest exponent. Then divide each term by the GCF to find what stays in the parentheses.
Simplifying a fraction with polynomials
Factoring lets you simplify a fraction whose numerator and denominator are polynomials. Some problems call this an algebraic fraction. In US classes it is a rational expression. Factor the top and the bottom, then cancel the common factors.

Putting It All Together
Longer expressions mix several operations. Follow the order of operations: do the multiplications and special products first, and then add and subtract. Put every product in parentheses before you subtract it.
Profit is revenue minus cost. If revenue is $R(x) = -0.1x^2 + 30x$ and cost is $C(x) = 0.3x^2 + 5x + 100$, then
$$B(x) = R(x) - C(x) = -0.1x^2 + 30x - 0.3x^2 - 5x - 100 = -0.4x^2 + 25x - 100.$$For $x = 10$ items, $B(10) = -0.4(100) + 25(10) - 100 = 110$.
