Ratios and Proportions

Before you start, make sure you know: Fractions. Equivalent fractions. (Math 6)
Before you start, make sure you know: Linear equations (Math 6)

A youth soccer team has 5 boys and 7 girls. A trail-mix recipe calls for 2 cups of peanuts for every 3 cups of raisins. In both cases we compare two quantities by dividing. That comparison is a ratio, and when two ratios are equal, they form a proportion. By the end of this page you will know how much of each ingredient you need when you make a bigger batch.

Writing and simplifying ratios

At a video game tournament there are 16 strategy players and 24 sports players. The ratio of strategy to sports players is $16 : 24$. Divide both numbers by their GCF (greatest common factor), 8, and you get $2 : 3$. For every 2 strategy players there are 3 sports players.

Two boxes, each holding 2 strategy dots and 3 sports dots, showing that the ratio 16 to 24 simplifies to 2 to 3. 16 strategy24 sports each box has a 2 : 3 ratio 16 : 24 = 2 : 3

Simplifying a ratio works just like simplifying a fraction. Divide both terms by their GCF until they have no common factor left. That is simplest form.

If both quantities use the same unit, such as 6 in. to 24 in., the ratio has no units: $6 : 24 = 1 : 4$. When the units differ, the ratio is called a rate. You will meet rates in the next section.

Rates and unit rates

To get a unit rate, divide the first quantity by the second. The word "per" tells you what goes in the denominator. "Miles per hour" means miles ÷ hours.

Often the time is given in minutes, but the rate asks for hours. Convert first (60 minutes = 1 hour).

In shopping, a unit rate is a unit price. A 4-pack of batteries costs $\$7.00$, so each battery costs $7.00 \div 4 = \$1.75$.

Proportions and cross products

If the ratio $\dfrac{y}{x}$ is always the same number $k$, the two quantities have a proportional relationship, and $k$ is the constant of proportionality. It is also the unit rate.

Why does this work? Multiply both sides of $\frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d}$ by $b \cdot d$. On the left the $b$'s cancel and you get $a \cdot d$. On the right the $d$'s cancel and you get $b \cdot c$.

The proportion 3 over 8 equals 15 over x with crossed arrows showing the two cross products, 3 times x and 8 times 15. 3 8 = 15 x cross product cross product 3 · x 8 · 15 = 120

So if you know three of the four numbers, you can find the fourth by solving a one-step equation:

$$\frac{3}{8} = \frac{15}{x} \ \Rightarrow\ 3x = 120 \ \Rightarrow\ x = 40$$

Another way to see equivalent ratios is to multiply (or divide) both terms by the same number. Since $3 : 8 = 15 : 40$, we multiplied both terms by... well, $3 \times 5 = 15$ and $8 \times 5 = 40$.

Screens are often described by their aspect ratio, width to height.

To check whether two ratios form a proportion, simplify both, or compare the cross products. For example, $\frac{6}{10}$ and $\frac{9}{15}$ both simplify to $\frac{3}{5}$, and also $6 \cdot 15 = 90 = 10 \cdot 9$.

Comparing ratios

To decide which of two ratios is bigger, you need to put them in a form that is easy to compare. There are three standard ways:

  1. Divide each ratio to get a decimal.

  2. Rewrite them with a common denominator.

  3. Compare unit rates (for example, price per ounce).

Scale and size

Think of a model car, a blueprint, or a map. Each one is a smaller (or bigger) copy of something real. The scale is the ratio of a length on the drawing or model to the matching length on the real object. A scale of $1 : 250$ means 1 unit on the model stands for 250 of the same unit in real life.

Two rules keep scale problems under control:

  • Both lengths must be in the same unit before you write the ratio.

  • Enlarging or shrinking a shape keeps its shape. The ratio of width to height does not change.

Two rectangles, 4 inches by 3 inches and 8 inches by 6 inches, both with width to height ratio 4 to 3. 4 : 3 4 in. 3 in. 8 : 6 = 4 : 3 8 in. 6 in.

Now a twist: what happens to area when you change the scale? Take a real room that is 20 ft by 15 ft, so its area is $300 \text{ ft}^2$. At scale $1 : 10$ the model is 2 ft by 1.5 ft, so its area is $3 \text{ ft}^2$. The area ratio is $3 : 300 = 1 : 100$, which is $1^2 : 10^2$.

Why? Each of the two dimensions shrinks by a factor of $k$, so the area shrinks by $k \cdot k$.

Combining ratios

Sometimes two ratios share a quantity, and you can link them. Suppose you know A to B and B to C. Then A to C is the product:

$$\frac{A}{C} = \frac{A}{B} \cdot \frac{B}{C}$$

Ratios with decimals work the same way. Use a proportion and cross multiply. If a problem says a quantity is a maximum, use up the whole budget. Find how much is available per unit, then use the ratio.

Ratios from formulas and measurements

Many well-known quantities are ratios in disguise. Speed is distance to time. Density is mass to volume, $D = \dfrac{m}{V}$. Population density is people per unit of area (people per square mile, or per square kilometer in many data sets). The body mass index has a ratio too: mass divided by height squared.

To solve a formula for the unknown, treat it as a one-step equation. If $D = \dfrac{m}{V}$, then $m = D \cdot V$.

When the pieces of a ratio come from areas, convert everything to the same unit first.
