Oxygen-Containing Compounds

Before you start, make sure you know: Introduction to organic nomenclature: monofunctional compounds (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))

The rubbing alcohol (ethanol) in a pharmacy and the methoxymethane in certain aerosols have the same molecular formula, $\text{C}_2\text{H}_6\text{O}$, and very different properties: one boils at $78\ ^\circ\text{C}$ and is a liquid on your table; the other boils at $-25\ ^\circ\text{C}$ and is a gas. The difference lies in how that single oxygen atom is arranged inside the molecule. By the end of the page you will see why.

Alcohols: the −OH group

Rubbing alcohol disinfects and evaporates within seconds, leaving a cold feeling on the skin. With three or more carbons, the $-\text{OH}$ group (hydroxyl) can be in different positions, and each one gives a different substance. How do we indicate the exact position in the name?

Skeleton of propan-2-ol: three carbons numbered 1 to 3 in a chain, with the hydroxyl group (−OH) attached to the central carbon, C2. OH C1 C2 C3 hydroxyl group propan-2-ol −OH on carbon 2

Branched chains: alkyl substituents

Carboxylic acids: the −COOH group

If you leave a bottle of wine open for several days, the ethanol reacts with oxygen in the air and the wine turns into vinegar. What transformation took place, and what is the family that results called?

Structural formula of ethanoic acid, CH₃–COOH: a methyl group (carbon 2) attached to the carboxyl group (carbon 1), whose carbon has a double bond to one oxygen and a single bond to an –OH group. methyl group (–CH₃) carboxyl group (–COOH) C C O O H H H H C2 C1 C=O double bond C–O single bond ethanoic acid CH₃–COOH

General formulas and isomerism

Each saturated oxygen-containing family has a general formula in terms of the number of carbons $n$. Since several families share the same formula, it helps you figure out which isomers are possible and which are not.

Three types of isomerism

Isomers have the same molecular formula but different structure. Depending on what changes, there are three types:

  • Chain: the shape of the carbon skeleton changes (straight versus branched), with the same functional group. Example: butan-1-ol, $\text{CH}_3\text{-CH}_2\text{-CH}_2\text{-CH}_2\text{-OH}$, and 2-methylpropan-1-ol, $\text{CH}_3\text{-CH(CH}_3\text{)-CH}_2\text{-OH}$; both are $\text{C}_4\text{H}_{10}\text{O}$.

  • Positional: the chain is the same and the same functional group changes location. Example: butan-1-ol and butan-2-ol.

  • Functional: the functional group changes, that is, the family. Example: ethanol and methoxymethane.
