Nitrogenous Compounds

Before you start, make sure you know: Introduction to organic nomenclature: monofunctional compounds (High School Year 1 (semesters 1 and 2))

The smell of fish that has been sitting for hours at the open-air market, the acetaminophen in your medicine cabinet, and the fibers of a climbing rope have something in common: they all contain nitrogen as part of an organic functional group. Amines, amides, and nitriles are the three nitrogen families you will learn to name in this section.

Amines: the amino group

When fish decomposes, it releases volatile substances with a penetrating smell that contain nitrogen. How are these molecules, derived from ammonia, named and represented?

Ball-and-stick models of ammonia and methylamine: when one hydrogen of NH₃ is replaced by a methyl group, CH₃–NH₂ is obtained, a primary amine with the amino group –NH₂. N H H H H replaced H → CH₃ substitution C N H H H H H methyl group –CH₃ amino group –NH₂ NH₃ ammonia CH₃–NH₂ methylamine In general: R–NH₂ → primary amine

Isomerism in amines

Two compounds are isomers if they have the same molecular formula but different structural formulas. With amines, two common cases appear:

  • Positional isomerism: the chain is the same, but the amino group is on a different carbon. Example, $\text{C}_4\text{H}_{11}\text{N}$: butan-1-amine, $\text{CH}_3\text{-CH}_2\text{-CH}_2\text{-CH}_2\text{-NH}_2$, and butan-2-amine, $\text{CH}_3\text{-CH}_2\text{-CH(NH}_2\text{)-CH}_3$.

  • Chain isomerism: the shape of the carbon chain changes. Example, $\text{C}_4\text{H}_{11}\text{N}$: butan-1-amine (straight chain) and 2-methylpropan-2-amine or 2-methylpropan-1-amine (branched chain).

With $\text{C}_3\text{H}_9\text{N}$, the two primary amines, propan-1-amine and propan-2-amine, are positional isomers. Ethylmethylamine, $\text{CH}_3\text{-CH}_2\text{-NH-CH}_3$, also has the formula $\text{C}_3\text{H}_9\text{N}$ but is secondary: the type of group changes, so this is functional isomerism.
