The Vector Nature of Forces

At a Gaelic football club fundraiser, two teams pull on a rope in a game of tug of war, with different forces and in directions that are not always completely opposite. To predict which way the rope will move, it is not enough to add or subtract numbers: forces are vectors, and vectors are added using their own rules, which combine geometry and trigonometry.

Vector quantity: magnitude, direction and sense

If you push a piece of furniture with 100 N, it will not move in the same way if you push straight on, from the side or downwards: besides the strength, what other information do we need to know what effect it will have?

Vector representation of a 50 N force applied to a cart, with a direction of 35° above the horizontal and a sense upwards and to the right. cart magnitude: 50 N direction: 35° above the horizontal sense: up and to the right

Forces in the same direction: algebraic addition

When several forces act along the same line (even if there are more than two), the resultant is calculated by assigning a positive sign to one sense and a negative sign to the opposite one, and adding algebraically.

Three forces along the same line, F₁ = +12 N and F₂ = +7 N to the right and F₃ = −5 N to the left, and their resultant R = 14 N to the right, calculated by the algebraic sum 12 + 7 − 5. Positive sense → dashed line = common starting point of the forces F₁ = +12 N F₂ = +7 N F₃ = −5 N R = 14 N R = 12 + 7 − 5 = 14 N resultant to the right (+ sign)

Graphical addition of forces that are not aligned: the parallelogram

If two forces do not act along the same line, their magnitudes cannot simply be added or subtracted.

Scalar Vector
Has magnitude only magnitude, direction and sense
Examples mass, speed, time, energy force, displacement, velocity, acceleration
Adding ordinary arithmetic parallelogram rule or components

Scalar quantities such as mass and speed have only magnitude, so they add like ordinary numbers. Forces do not. We use the graphical construction of the parallelogram or, equivalently, the triangle method. In this course we calculate the resultant using Pythagoras and trigonometry with perpendicular components only, so the cosine rule is not needed.

Two forces of $5\ \text{N}$ each act on the same point forming an angle of $90^\circ$. Draw the situation in your notebook using a scale of $1\ \text{cm}$ per newton, apply the parallelogram rule and measure the magnitude of the resultant. Then check the result using Pythagoras' theorem (it should be approximately $7.1\ \text{N}$).

Resolving a force into components

When you drag a suitcase by pulling on its sloping handle, part of your effort makes it move along the ground and another part lifts it upwards: how do we know what fraction of the force acts in each direction?

To add forces at any angle to each other, the most general method is the analytical one: resolve each force into its horizontal component ($F_x$) and vertical component ($F_y$).

Resolution of a force F, which forms an angle α with the horizontal, into its horizontal component Fₓ = F·cos α and its vertical component F_y = F·sin α, forming a right-angled triangle. y x α F Fₓ = F·cos α Fy = F·sin α

Back to the start: To find out which way the rope moves, we add the teams' forces. If they pull along the same line, we add them algebraically with signs; if they pull at an angle, we resolve each force into perpendicular components, add the components separately ($R_x$ and $R_y$) and find the direction with $\tan\alpha_R = R_y / R_x$. The rope accelerates in exactly the sense of the resultant vector.
