Separation techniques for mixtures
Your granny has mixed up peas and lentils in the same jar: since they are different sizes, a colander is enough to separate them. At the water treatment plant, Uisce Éireann also has to separate muck from river water before it reaches your tap. Each mixture is separated with a different technique, depending on what makes its components different from each other.
Filtration and decanting
When we pour sand into water or mix oil with vinegar in a dressing, we can clearly see that the parts do not blend together: how can we mechanically separate a solid suspended in a liquid, or two liquids that refuse to combine?

Evaporation, crystallisation and distillation
Seawater from Dublin Bay looks like pure water at first glance, but if we let a drop dry in the sun, a white crust of salt is left behind: how can we separate the components of a homogeneous solution, and how can we also recover the liquid before it is lost into the air?

Water and alcohol mix perfectly, but alcohol boils at a lower temperature than water. To separate them, the mixture is heated: the alcohol evaporates first, then that vapour is cooled and collected as a liquid in another container, as shown in the figure.
What technique is it?

- b) On what differing property of water and alcohol is distillation based to achieve this?

Imagine that we distill seawater in the laboratory.
- a) What substance is collected at the end, after cooling the vapour? What remains in the heated vessel?
- b) With this method, drinking water could be obtained from the sea. Why do you think it is not done this way on a large scale everywhere? Think about the energy required.

On a desert island you only have seawater, a wide container, a sheet of transparent plastic, a small cup and plenty of sun. You set up the device shown in the figure: you leave the container with seawater in the sun, place the small cup in the center (without letting any seawater get into it) and cover everything with the plastic sheet, with a small weight right above the small cup. After a few hours, the small cup contains clean water.
- a) Which two processes (changes of state) take place inside the device? Which laboratory technique does it imitate as a whole?
- b) Why does the salt never reach the small cup?
- c) Which natural phenomenon does something very similar with seawater?
Choosing the right technique
For a mixture of several liquids with close boiling points, such as the crude oil in a refinery, fractional distillation is used. You only need to know its name at this stage.
