The laboratory

You need to measure about 25 mL of water for an experiment. On the shelf in your school science lab there is a beaker, a measuring cylinder and a conical flask. Choosing the right instrument — and knowing how to use it safely — is the first skill of any scientist.

Measuring instruments

Basic laboratory equipment: a beaker with approximate markings, a measuring cylinder with a fine scale and a meniscus, a conical flask with a wide base and narrow neck, and a thermometer with a scale in degrees Celsius. 50 100 150 mL meniscus 100 50 0 °C beaker measuring cylinder conical flask thermometer approximate volume accurate volume swirl without splashing temperature

Hazard symbols

This diagram shows the steps when handling a chemical:

Sequence when handling a chemical: a bottle with a hazard symbol (skull and crossbones), reading the full label with a magnifying glass, and a checklist with safety goggles for following the protocol. Hazard symbol Read the label Follow the protocol

Chemical products carry standardised symbols that warn of the danger at a glance, and they are read together with the full label and the safety instructions.
