Linear and Affine Functions

Before you start, make sure you know: Graphing on the Cartesian plane (Secondary Year 2 (first cycle))
Before you start, make sure you know: First-degree equations (Secondary Year 2 (first cycle))

A motoconcho driver charges 50 pesos to start the ride and 20 pesos for every kilometer. A gym charges 1,200 pesos to sign up and 900 pesos a month. Your piggy bank grows by 100 pesos every week. In all of these cases the graph is a straight line, and with just two numbers (how much it goes up for each unit and where it starts) you know everything.

Slope and intercept

Move $m$ and $b$. Notice that $m$ changes the steepness, while $b$ moves the line up or down without turning it:

  • $m > 0$: the function is increasing.

  • $m < 0$: the function is decreasing.

  • $m = 0$: horizontal line (constant function, $y = b$).

  • The larger $|m|$ is, the steeper the line.

Calculating the slope

If you know two points $A(x_1, y_1)$ and $B(x_2, y_2)$ on the line:

$$m = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1} = \frac{\text{rise}}{\text{run}}$$ Slope calculation between points A(1, 2) and B(5, 4): run 4, rise 2, slope 0.5. run 4rise 2 A(1, 2)B(5, 4) m = 2/4 = 0.5

Slope as a percent

On ramps, streets, and highways, slope is expressed as a percent: it is the slope $m$ multiplied by 100.

$$\text{slope in \%} = \frac{\text{height gained}}{\text{horizontal distance}} \times 100$$

Accessibility regulations limit the gradient of ramps: an accessible ramp must not exceed a $10\ \,\%$ gradient. The gradient, expressed as a percentage, is the quotient of the vertical rise divided by the horizontal distance covered, multiplied by $100$, as shown in the figure.

α 6 m 0.54 m gradient = ? % gradient = ? %
  1. a) A ramp rises by $0.54\ \text{m}$ over a horizontal distance of $6\ \text{m}$. Calculate its gradient as a percentage. Does it comply with regulations?
  1. b) If you want to cover the same vertical height difference with a gradient of $8\ \,\%$, what minimum horizontal length must the ramp have?
  1. c) Express the ramp from part a) as a function $y = mx$, taking the start of the ramp as the origin. What does $m$ mean?

Graphing a line and checking points

Two points are enough. Make a table with two simple values of $x$ (like 0 and 1), calculate their $y$ values, plot the points, and join them.

To check whether a point is on the line, substitute: $(1, 4)$ is on $y = -2x + 6$ because $-2 + 6 = 4$ ✓.
