Inverse Proportionality Function

Before you start, make sure you know: Inverse proportionality (Secondary Year 2 (first cycle))
Before you start, make sure you know: Graph of a function (Secondary Year 2 (first cycle))

To ride a bus from Santo Domingo to Santiago along the Autopista Duarte, it is about 150 km: the faster the bus goes, the less time it takes. At 50 km/h it takes 3 hours, at 75 km/h it takes 2 hours, and at 100 km/h it takes 1.5 hours. The product speed × time always equals 150. That relationship has a very particular graph: the hyperbola. Why does it never touch the axes? We will see at the end.

The function $y = \frac{k}{x}$

Change $k$, even to negative values, and observe where the branches end up:

  • If $k > 0$: the two branches are in quadrants I and III, and the function decreases on each branch.

  • If $k < 0$: the branches are in quadrants II and IV, and the function increases on each branch.

  • The greater $|k|$ is, the farther from the origin the branches are.

Why? If $x \cdot y = k$ and $k > 0$, then $x$ and $y$ have the same sign (both positive or both negative): quadrants I and III. If $k < 0$, they have different signs: quadrants II and IV.

To make a table of values, choose values of $x$ that divide $k$ evenly. For example, for $y = \frac{12}{x}$:

$x$ 1 2 3 4 6 12
$y$ 12 6 4 3 2 1

When $x$ increases, $y$ decreases, and the product is always 12.

Asymptotes, domain, and range

The hyperbola gets closer and closer to the axes, but never touches them:

  • When $x$ gets close to 0, $y$ becomes huge (positive or negative).

  • When $x$ becomes very large, $y$ gets close to 0.

Those lines that the graph hugs without touching are called asymptotes. In $y = \frac{k}{x}$ they are the two axes: $x = 0$ (vertical) and $y = 0$ (horizontal).

Graph of a hyperbola with branches in the first and third quadrants and asymptotes along the axes of the coordinate plane branch I branch III asymptote horizontal vertical asymptote

Since $x \neq 0$ and $y = \frac{k}{x}$ is never 0, we have:

$$\text{Dom}(f) = \mathbb{R} \setminus \{0\} = (-\infty, 0) \cup (0, \infty) \qquad \text{Rang}(f) = \mathbb{R} \setminus \{0\}$$

Problems with the hyperbola

If you know the relationship is one of inverse proportionality and you know one point, you already have $k$: $k = x \cdot y$.

In context, the domain is decided by the situation. For example, the travel time for a 240 km trip at speed $v$:

Hyperbola and line: intersection points

To find out whether a line and a hyperbola intersect, set the functions equal. The result is a quadratic equation, which is solved with the quadratic formula or by factoring.

The discriminant $\Delta = b^2 - 4ac$ tells you how many intersection points there are: $\Delta > 0$, two; $\Delta = 0$, one (tangent); $\Delta < 0$, none.
