Characteristics of a Function
Looking at a graph is not just "seeing a line": it means discovering where it starts and ends, when it goes up and when it goes down, where it reaches its maximum, and whether it repeats. These are the characteristics of a function, and with them you can describe everything that happens in a phenomenon, from your cell phone's battery to the height of a drone.
Domain and range
-
Domain $\text{Dom}(f)$: the values of $x$ for which the function exists (where there is a graph from left to right).
-
Range $\text{Rang}(f)$: the values that $y$ takes (from bottom to top).
Domain of algebraic functions
When you have the formula, ask which values of $x$ "break" the function:
| Type of function | Condition | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Polynomial | none: $\text{Dom}(f)=(-\infty, \infty)$ | $f(x)=x^2-4x+3$ |
| Rational (fraction) | denominator $\neq 0$ | $f(x)=\dfrac{5}{x-2}$, $x\neq 2$ |
| With a square root | radicand $\ge 0$ | $f(x)=\sqrt{x-1}$, $x\ge 1$ |
| With absolute value | none | $f(x)=\lvert x\rvert$ |

A biologist is studying the population of an insect species in a laboratory. The population $P$ (in thousands) varies according to the room temperature $T$ (in $ºC$) following the function:
$$P(T) = \frac{T^2 - 16}{T - 5}$$- a) Calculate the domain of this function. For what temperature does the model cease to make physical sense?
- b) Find the x-intercepts. What do these values mean for the insect population?
- c) Are there intervals of the independent variable where the function is not continuous? Justify whether the biologist should avoid any specific temperature.
Piecewise functions
Some functions use a different formula depending on the value of $x$. Each formula has its own piece, indicated by a condition. The domain of the function is the union of the pieces.
$$g(x) = \begin{cases} 2x + 1 & \text{if } x < 0 \\ 5 & \text{if } 0 \le x < 3 \\ x^2 - 4 & \text{if } x \ge 3 \end{cases}$$To evaluate, first decide which piece the value of $x$ falls in and use only that formula.

A smart energy management system for a bioclimatic home controls when the heating switches on depending on the outdoor temperature. The function $f(x)$ represents the cost in pesos per hour as a function of the temperature $x$ in degrees Celsius:
$$f(x) = \begin{cases} -0.5x + 8 & \text{if } x < 10 \\ 3 & \text{if } 10 \le x < 20 \\ 0.1x^2 - 4x + 7 & \text{if } x \ge 20 \end{cases}$$You have its graph on the temperature interval $[-10, 30]$. Using it and the expression of $f$, analyze the following characteristics of the function:
- a) Determine the domain and the range of the function for the temperature interval $[-10, 30]$.
- b) Study the continuity. Are there any points of discontinuity? If so, state what type they are and what they mean in the context of energy saving.
- c) Find the intervals of monotonicity (increasing and decreasing).
Continuity
A function is continuous if you can draw it without lifting your pencil. If there are jumps or holes, it is discontinuous at those points. Piecewise rates (the price of shipping a package depending on its weight) are often discontinuous: they make "jumps." A filled point means the value is included; an open one means it is not.

Increasing, decreasing, maxima, and minima
-
Increasing on an interval: as $x$ increases, $y$ increases (the graph goes up, reading from left to right).
-
Decreasing: as $x$ increases, $y$ decreases (it goes down).
-
Constant: $y$ does not change (horizontal stretch).
-
Relative maximum: a point where it goes from increasing to decreasing (a "peak"). Relative minimum: from decreasing to increasing (a "valley").
-
Absolute maximum/minimum: the highest/lowest value of the entire function.

Symmetry and periodicity
-
Even symmetry: the graph is symmetric about the $Y$-axis: $f(-x) = f(x)$. Example: $x^2$.
-
Odd symmetry: symmetric about the origin: $f(-x) = -f(x)$. Example: $x^3$.
-
Periodic: the graph repeats exactly every certain interval, the period $T$. Examples: tides, the heartbeat, a Ferris wheel. If $T$ is the period, $f(x+T)=f(x)$.
Symmetry about a vertical line
The $Y$-axis is not the only possible "mirror." A graph can be symmetric about a vertical line $x=a$: what lies $h$ units to the right of $a$ is the same as what lies $h$ units to the left of $a$.
$$f(a+h)=f(a-h)\quad\text{for all } h$$If $a=0$, it is the usual even symmetry. A parabola is symmetric about the vertical line through its vertex.
