The Quadratic Function

Before you start, make sure you know: Quadratic equations (Secondary Year 2 (first cycle))
Before you start, make sure you know: Representation on the Cartesian plane (Secondary Year 2 (first cycle))

A baseball player hits a ball at the ballpark: it rises, slows down, and falls. Its path is a parabola. So is the stream of water from a fountain, the cable of a suspension bridge, or the graph of the area of a lot depending on its width. Behind all of them there is an algebraic function with $x^2$: the quadratic function. How can you know how high the ball goes without watching it fly? We will solve it with a single point: the vertex.

The Parabola and Its Elements

Move $a$, $b$, and $c$ and watch what each one does:

  • Sign of $a$: if $a > 0$ it opens upward (minimum vertex); if $a < 0$, it opens downward (maximum vertex).

  • Size of $|a|$: the larger it is, the more closed (narrow) the parabola is.

  • $c$: it is the intercept with the $Y$-axis, because $f(0) = c$.

Domain and range. Since any real number can be squared, the domain is always $\text{Dom}(f) = (-\infty, \infty)$. The range depends on the vertex: if $a > 0$, $\text{Rang}(f) = [y_V, \infty)$; if $a < 0$, $\text{Rang}(f) = (-\infty, y_V]$.

Table of Values and Free Fall

To get to know a specific parabola, the most direct way is a table of values. For example, an object that is dropped falls $d = 5t^2$ meters in $t$ seconds:

$t$ (s) 0 1 2 3
$d$ (m) 0 5 20 45

Notice: in 1 s it falls 5 m, but in 3 s it doesn't fall 15 m but 45 m. The function is not linear: the distance grows faster and faster.

Successive Differences

If the values of $x$ go up by 1 each time, there is a way to recognize a quadratic function from the table alone. You subtract consecutive values of $y$ (first differences) and then subtract those differences from each other (second differences).

Intercepts with the Axes and Graphing

  • $Y$-axis: the point $(0, c)$.

  • $X$-axis: solve $ax^2 + bx + c = 0$ with the quadratic formula or by factoring. Its solutions are the zeros or roots of the function. Depending on the discriminant $\Delta = b^2 - 4ac$ there are two intercepts ($\Delta > 0$), one (the vertex touches the axis, $\Delta = 0$), or none ($\Delta < 0$).

For example, $y = -x^2 + 2x + 3$: it opens downward ($a = -1$), $x_V = \frac{-2}{-2} = 1$, $y_V = 4$; it crosses the $Y$-axis at $(0, 3)$ and the $X$-axis at $x = -1$ and $x = 3$.

Translations and the Equation from Points

If you start from $y = x^2$ (vertex at $(0, 0)$), adding a number to the whole function raises or lowers the curve, and changing $x$ to $x - h$ moves it sideways.

Finding the Equation from Points

A parabola $y = ax^2 + bx + c$ has three unknown numbers: $a$, $b$, and $c$. That's why you need three points on the curve. Each point, when substituted into the equation, gives an equation; with the three you solve a system.

Parabolas in Real Life: Maximums

When a problem asks for the maximum height, the maximum area, or the maximum revenue and the formula is quadratic, the answer is at the vertex.

If you are asked at what moment or how many times a certain height is reached, set up $f(x) = \text{height}$ and solve the quadratic equation: there may be two solutions (when it goes up and when it comes down) and sometimes one is discarded, for example a negative time.

A line and a parabola intersect where their equations are equal: set them equal and solve the resulting equation. If $\Delta > 0$ they intersect at two points, if $\Delta = 0$ the line is tangent, and if $\Delta < 0$ they do not intersect.

Go back to the beginning: the batted ball rises up to the vertex of its parabola, and that is where its maximum height is.
