Linear functions f(x) = ax + b

Before you start, make sure you know: Linear functions (3rd Year, Junior Cycle)

A Leap Card top-up, a bin collection charge, a mobile phone plan: whenever a price is a fixed amount plus a steady amount per unit, the graph is a straight line. In this section you will learn to write such a function as $f(x)=ax+b$, read its slope and y-intercept, and use it. We will come back to a bin collection charge at the end.

Graphical comparison of a linear function that passes through the origin, an affine function shifted vertically and a horizontal constant function. f(x) = 0.8x g(x) = 0.5x + 40 h(x) = 70 O

A first-degree polynomial function $f(x) = mx + n$ is sought that simultaneously satisfies three conditions:\n1. It is a decreasing affine function.\n2. It intersects the $y$-axis at a point located $4$ units below the origin of coordinates.\n3. The preimage of $2$ is equal to $-3$.\na) Determine with justification the exact values of the slope $m$ and the $y$-intercept $n$, and write the algebraic expression of $f(x)$.\nb) Justify from the sign of the slope why the function is decreasing.\nc) Check algebraically whether the point $Q(-6, 8)$ belongs to the graph of this function.

Calculating images and preimages

Calculating the image of $c$ means evaluating $f(c)$: substituting $c$ for $x$ in the expression. Calculating the preimage of $k$ (the values of $x$ such that $f(x)=k$) requires solving the first-degree equation $ax+b=k$.

Cian has the affine function $f(x) = 3x + 4$ and needs to calculate the image of $x = 10$. Since he knows that $f(5) = 3 \times 5 + 4 = 19$, he reasons as follows: "Since $10$ is twice $5$, the value of $f(10)$ must be exactly twice $19$, that is, $f(10) = 38$".\na) Identify Cian's conceptual error and explain why it is not valid to apply a direct rule of three to this type of functions.\nb) What value should the $y$-intercept $n$ have for Cian's reasoning to have been completely correct?\nc) Calculate the actual value of $f(10)$ using its formula and check algebraically how many units the value of $y$ actually increases by when $x$ increases by $5$ units.

Reading a line from its graph

To read the equation from a graph, first find the y-intercept $b$: where the line cuts the y-axis. Then pick two points on the line with clear coordinates and calculate the slope $a=\dfrac{\text{rise}}{\text{run}}=\dfrac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1}$. Going right, a rise up is positive and a drop down is negative.

A point lying on the graph

A point $P(a,b)$ lies on the graph of $f$ if and only if $f(a)=b$. Checking this means substituting and comparing; it is different from determining the equation of a line, which in general requires two independent conditions (two points, or one point and the slope).
