Inverse proportion: y = k/x

Cian and his friends want to hire a minibus to Galway for a match. It costs €240 and the cost is shared equally. If 6 go, each pays €40; if 12 go, each pays €20. Why does doubling the group halve the price, and what does the graph of this look like?

The functions studied so far —first and second degree— have domain $\mathbb{R}$. The inverse proportionality function is the first in this block whose domain is not all of $\mathbb{R}$: a division appears, and a division imposes an algebraic restriction. That restriction is the key to its whole graph.

Algebraic definition and domain

  • If $k>0$: the graph lies in the first and third quadrants.

  • If $k<0$: it lies in the second and fourth quadrants.

  • The greater $|k|$ is, the further the curve is from the axes.

Aoife is studying the monotonicity of the function $f(x) = \frac{8}{x}$. She knows that the constant is $k = 8 > 0$ and her teacher explained in class that functions with $k > 0$ are decreasing. To check this empirically, she takes two values of the variable: $x_1 = -2$ and $x_2 = 4$. Calculating their images, she gets $f(-2) = -4$ and $f(4) = 2$. Surprised, she observes that $-2 < 4$ and yet $f(-2) < f(4)$, so she concludes that “the theory fails, because moving to the right the function has gone up”. Identify and explain precisely Aoife's conceptual error, clarify why her example does not contradict the theory, and state how the decrease of $f(x)$ must be phrased in a mathematically rigorous way.

Modelling with inverse proportionality

Inverse proportionality appears in inverse sharing (more workers, less time), the speed–time relationship over a fixed distance, or the pressure–volume relationship of a gas at constant temperature. The key step is to identify which product of the two quantities stays constant.
