The life cycle

Before you start, make sure you know: Characteristics of living things (1st Year, Junior Cycle)

You are born, you grow, you change and you grow old: every person goes through the same major stages, although each one experiences them at their own pace. Right now, you are entering one of the most intense: adolescence. Think of the school tour or a GAA match day: in the crowd there are toddlers, teenagers, parents and grandparents, all at different stages. By the end of this page you will be able to place each of them.

The stages of the life cycle

If you look at photos of your family, you can see babies learning to walk, cousins in secondary school, parents at work and grandparents who are retired: how is this journey through time organised biologically?

Puberty

Between the ages of 10 and 15 (around 6th Class to 2nd Year) you notice that your clothes get too small very quickly, your voice changes and new body hair appears: which biological process sets off these transformations?

Silhouette of a girl and a boy showing the primary sexual characteristics (ovaries and testes) and the secondary sexual characteristics (breasts, hips, hair, beard and voice) that develop in puberty. Primary Secondary Breasts Ovaries Wide hips Pubic hair Beard Voice change Pubic hair Testes Girl Boy

These changes link to what you learn in SPHE and Staying well: every body develops at its own pace, and looking after your diet, sleep and mental health supports healthy development. Hormones also depend on the body having enough energy. Girls naturally gain some body fat in puberty, because fat tissue helps to make oestrogen and so supports the menstrual cycle. Severe dieting, or eating far too little, can therefore delay puberty, stop periods, weaken growing bones and slow growth.

Puberty now starts earlier than it did 150 years ago (menarche at about 12-13 instead of 16-17). Better nutrition and healthcare are thought to explain much of this. At the same time, people now become independent and start a family later, often after the age of 30. Being able to reproduce does not mean the brain, bones and emotions are fully mature, so we are not yet full adults: that takes years more.

The body keeps its hormone levels steady: when there is enough of a hormone, the brain tells the glands to make less. Taking synthetic hormones (such as anabolic steroids) tricks the body into thinking there is already enough, so the testes make less natural testosterone. Sex hormones also close the growth plates at the ends of the long bones, so taking extra hormones during puberty can stop growth early and leave a person shorter.

During puberty, hormonal changes naturally cause an increase in adipose tissue in girls (essential for the maturation of the reproductive system) and rapid musculoskeletal development in boys. However, many adolescents resort to extremely restrictive diets to mimic unrealistic standards of thinness seen on social media.

  1. a) Biologically justify why maintaining an adequate percentage of body fat is essential for the proper functioning of the reproductive axis and the regulation of hormonal cycles.
  2. b) Predict what physiological consequences severe caloric restriction sustained during puberty can have on growth in height, bone density, and fertility.

Over the past century and a half, the average age of menarche (girls' first menstruation, one of the milestones of puberty) has advanced from 16-17 years to 12-13 years in developed countries. In contrast, the average age for becoming independent and starting a family has been delayed beyond the age of 30.

  1. a) Justify what biomedical and nutritional factors explain the earlier onset of reproductive maturity compared to the 19th century.
  2. b) A friend claims: “If the body is already fertile at age 13, it means that biologically we are already full adults”. Refute this statement by providing two biological arguments (one concerning skeletal ossification and the other regarding the development of the nervous system).

A 14-year-old boy in the middle of his pubertal growth spurt is offered anabolic steroids (synthetic testosterone derivatives) at the gym to speed up muscle mass gain.

  1. a) Sex hormones regulate both muscle development and the closure of epiphyseal plates (growth plates of long bones). Predict the irreversible consequence that taking anabolic steroids would have on his final height and explain why.
  2. b) Knowing that the endocrine system self-regulates through negative feedback mechanisms, explain what will happen to the natural synthesis of testosterone in his own testicles if his body detects a massive presence of external synthetic hormone.

In a decision-making experiment, 14-year-olds and 25-year-old adults were evaluated in a driving simulator with amber traffic lights.

  • Driving alone: both the 14-year-olds and the 25-year-old adults took a low and very similar level of risk.

  • Driving with two peers of the same age in the room: adolescents doubled their risky behaviours (accelerating through amber lights), whereas in adults, the risk did not change.

  1. a) Based on the asynchronous development of the brain during adolescence (the emotional and reward limbic system versus the prefrontal cortex for control and planning), justify why the presence of a peer group has such a strong influence on adolescents' risky decisions.
  2. b) Design a specific guideline or preventive strategy that a student your age can apply when facing peer pressure to avoid acting impulsively.

Ageing

Sleep needs change with age: babies need about 14 hours a day, teenagers about 8-10 hours and older people about 7-8 hours. Growth hormone is released mostly during sleep, so sleeping well matters most while the body is growing.

Life expectancy is the average number of years a newborn is expected to live. It is not the age at which people become old. In the past it was low (for example about 35 years) mainly because many babies and children died of infections, which pulled the average down. Adults who survived childhood often lived to 60 or 70. The biological stages of life have not changed.

Disability-free life expectancy (also called healthy life expectancy) is the average number of years a person lives in good health, without a limiting chronic illness or loss of independence. The years lived with illness or disability = life expectancy − disability-free life expectancy. Habits such as regular exercise, a balanced diet and avoiding smoking tend to widen the healthy part of life, not just the total number of years.

Two 75-year-old individuals suffer an identical trip on the street:

  • Aoife engaged in strength and moderate-impact exercise during her youth and maintained a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D; her bone mass shows a slight loss typical of old age, and after the fall, she only suffers a bruise.

  • Niamh led a sedentary life from adolescence onwards, avoided dairy products, and rarely spent time in the sun; she suffers from advanced osteoporosis and, after the same fall, fractures her hip.

  1. a) Explain the concept of "peak bone mass" achieved at the end of growth and justify why lifestyle during adolescence and youth conditions bone fragility in old age.
  2. b) A classmate claims: “I don't need to exercise or watch what I eat at 14; when I turn 60, I'll start taking calcium for my bones”. Refute their argument using biological reasons.

  1. a) Refute their conclusion by explaining precisely the difference between the biological stages of our species' life cycle and the statistical indicator of "life expectancy at birth".
  2. b) What demographic phenomenon concentrated in the earliest stages of life drastically lowered that average in the past, even though adults could live to be 70? Mention two biomedical advances that made it possible to raise life expectancy by reducing this phenomenon.

Look at the comparative data from two population groups followed until the end of their life cycle:

  • Group B (regular physical activity of strength and endurance, Mediterranean diet, and absence of toxic substances from youth): Life expectancy = 84.0 years; disability-free life expectancy = 74.5 years.

  2. b) Justify at a cellular and physiological level why bad habits during adolescence (such as damage to the vascular endothelium from smoking or bone mass deficit due to a sedentary lifestyle) have a cumulative impact that manifests at age 70, even if at age 15 the person feels completely healthy.
