The concept of the derivative
You already know how to calculate the average rate of change (ARC) of a function over an interval $[a,b]$: it is the gradient of the line joining the two points on the graph, the secant line. But there is a question the ARC cannot answer: how fast is the function changing exactly at a point, not between two points? To answer it we need to do something new: shrink the interval until it practically disappears.
From the average rate to the instantaneous rate
Look at the table: the smaller the interval, the more the ARC settles at a particular number.
| Interval | ARC of $f(x)=x^2$ |
|---|---|
| $[3,\ 3{,}1]$ | $6{,}1$ |
| $[3,\ 3{,}01]$ | $6{,}01$ |
| $[3,\ 3{,}001]$ | $6{,}001$ |
| $[3,\ 3{,}0001]$ | $6{,}0001$ |

Geometric meaning: the tangent line
The secant line joins two points on the curve. If the second point gets closer and closer to the first, the secant gradually turns until it becomes the tangent line: the line that "touches" the curve at a single point, with the same slope as the curve at that instant. The derivative $f'(a)$ is, exactly, the gradient of that tangent line.
