Basic electric circuits

For a bulb to light up it needs a cell, wires and a closed path. If any of those parts is missing, it will not light. We are going to build circuits, step by step, and understand why some go out all at once while others do not.

Series circuits

In many old Christmas fairy lights, as soon as a single bulb comes loose or blows, all the others go out at once. How are they connected so that the failure of one stops the rest from working?

  1. a) What circuit component does the door activate without us noticing?
  2. b) Explain what happens to the light circuit when opening and closing the door.
  3. c) Considering household energy consumption, why is it important that the light turns off automatically?
Solve

Back to the beginning: Series circuits go out all at once because they share a single path that is broken if one component fails; in parallel, on the other hand, each receiver has its own independent branch and the others keep working.
