Power Functions

A pizza place sells a 7-inch personal pizza and a 14-inch large. The large one has twice the diameter. Does it have twice as much pizza? The area of a circle is $A = \pi r^2$, and the radius is squared, so the answer may surprise you. Formulas like this one, with the variable in the base and a fixed exponent, are called power functions. We'll come back to the pizza at the end.

What is a power function?

The exponent $n$ decides the shape of the graph. Move the slider and watch what happens when $n$ is positive, negative, or a fraction.

Identify which of the following algebraic expressions correspond to a power function: $f(x) = 3x^2$ $g(x) = 2^x$ $h(x) = \frac{5}{x^3}$ $i(x) = x^{1/2}$

Identify which of the following algebraic expressions correspond to a power function:

  • $f(x) = 3x^2$

  • $g(x) = 2^x$

  • $h(x) = \frac{5}{x^3}$

  • $i(x) = x^{1/2}$

Evaluating and finding a coefficient or exponent

To find $f(c)$, substitute $x=c$, compute the power first, then multiply by $a$. If you know a point $(x_0, y_0)$ on the graph, substitute both coordinates and solve for the unknown.

You can also find an unknown exponent. If $f(x)=x^n$ passes through $(2,32)$, then $2^n=32$. Since $32=2^5$, we get $n=5$.

Fractional exponents: roots

A fractional exponent is a root: $x^{1/2}=\sqrt{x}$, $x^{1/3}=\sqrt[3]{x}$, and in general $$x^{p/q}=\left(\sqrt[q]{x}\right)^p .$$

So the function that sends every positive number to its cube root is $f(x)=x^{1/3}$.

Comparing graphs and finding intersections

Every function $f(x)=x^n$ passes through $(1,1)$, since $1^n=1$. After that point, the exponent decides which graph is higher.

Graphs of y = x, y = x squared and y = x cubed in the first quadrant, all crossing at the point (1, 1) 1 2 1 4 y = x y = x² y = x³ (1, 1)

To find where two graphs intersect, set the two expressions equal and solve for $x$. Then substitute each solution into either function to get $y$.

To find the exponent of a curve in the first quadrant, read one point other than $(1,1)$ and test it. For example, if the curve passes through $(2,8)$ and has $a=1$, then $2^n=8$, so $n=3$.

Finding $a$ and $n$ from two points

When both $a$ and $n$ are unknown, use two points. Write one equation for each point, then divide one equation by the other. The unknown $a$ cancels out.

The exponent does not have to be an integer. If $(1,7)$ and $(9,21)$ are on the graph, then $a=7$ from the first point, and dividing gives $3=9^n$. Since $9^{1/2}=3$, we get $n=\tfrac12$ and $f(x)=7x^{1/2}=7\sqrt{x}$. When the numbers are not perfect powers of the same base, write them as powers of a common prime (for example $8=2^3$ and $4=2^2$) and compare exponents.
