Solving Other Types of Equations

Before you start, make sure you know: Quadratic equations (Math 8 (Pre-Algebra))
Before you start, make sure you know: Algebraic Identities (Math 7)

Aaliyah's family drives to a lake over a slow mountain road at 30 mph. They want their average speed for the whole round trip to be 40 mph. Since $\frac{30 + 50}{2} = 40$, you might guess they should drive back at 50 mph. That guess is wrong, and the correct answer comes from an equation with the unknown in a denominator.

Equations like $x^4 - 13x^2 + 36 = 0$, $\frac{12}{x} = x - 4$, $\sqrt{3x+4} = 5$, or $2^x = 8$ look new, but each one is a disguised version of an equation you can already solve. The trick is to recognize the disguise: a substitution, clearing denominators, isolating a radical, matching bases, or using the definition of a logarithm. At the end of the page we come back to the lake trip.

Equations quadratic in form

Some problems call these biquadratic equations. The method is the same.

Flow chart: substitute t = x² to turn a fourth-degree equation into a quadratic, solve for t, then undo the substitution with x = ±√t to get four solutions. x⁴ − 10x² + 9 = 0 t² − 10t + 9 = 0 t = x² t = 1 or t = 9 x = ±1 or x = ±3 x = ±√t

The graph shows why there are four solutions: the curve crosses the x-axis four times.

Quadratic in form: geometry problems

Rectangles often lead to these equations. If the length and width are written with $x^2$, multiplying them produces an $x^4$ term. Another common setup has $x$ and $\frac{k}{x}$ as the two sides, and then multiplying by $x^2$ clears the denominator.

When one fraction equals another fraction, as in $\frac{x+4}{x-1} = 3$, you may also cross-multiply: $x + 4 = 3(x - 1)$. That is the same as multiplying both sides by the LCD.

A cyclist travels to a neighboring town at a speed of $20 \text{ km/h}$ and returns along the same route at a speed of $x \text{ km/h}$. The average speed for the whole round trip is given by the formula $v_m = \frac{2 \cdot 20 \cdot x}{20 + x}$. If the total average speed was $24 \text{ km/h}$, set up a rational equation and calculate the return speed $x$.

Radicals in formulas and geometry

Many formulas have a square root: falling objects, pendulums, the Pythagorean Theorem. To find an unknown inside the radical, isolate the radical, then square both sides.

Radicals also come from the Pythagorean Theorem, $a^2 + b^2 = c^2$. The squares cancel the radical nicely: $(\sqrt{x + 3})^2 = x + 3$.
