Rate of Change and Average Rate of Change

Emma's family drives from Houston to Dallas, about 240 miles, in 4 hours. Her dad says, "We averaged 60 mph." But at the gas station the speedometer read 0, and on the highway it read 75. So what does "60 mph" really tell you, and what is the speedometer showing? In this section you will measure how fast a function changes over an interval, see what that means on a graph, and find out how shrinking the interval gets you to the speedometer reading.

Net Change and Average Rate of Change

When an input changes from $a$ to $b$, the output changes too. We measure that change in two ways.

Why divide by $b - a$? The net change tells you how much the output changed. Dividing by the width of the interval turns it into per one unit of input, so you can compare intervals of different lengths. That is exactly how "240 miles in 4 hours" becomes "60 miles per hour."

For a formula, evaluate $f$ at both endpoints first.

Now compare with a linear function. Take $f(x) = mx + c$ and any interval $[a, b]$:

$$\dfrac{f(b) - f(a)}{b - a} = \dfrac{(mb + c) - (ma + c)}{b - a} = \dfrac{m(b - a)}{b - a} = m.$$

The Secant Line and Reading Graphs

Look at the formula $\dfrac{f(b) - f(a)}{b - a}$ again. It is "rise over run" between the points $A(a, f(a))$ and $B(b, f(b))$ on the graph. That is the slope formula.

Graph of a curve with a secant line through points A and B, showing the horizontal change and vertical change that give its slope. A(a, f(a)) B(b, f(b)) Δx = b − a Δy = f(b) − f(a) secant line AB: slope = average rate of change

To find an average rate of change from a graph, read the coordinates of the two endpoints, then compute rise over run. Pick points where the curve crosses grid intersections so your readings are exact.

Units, Signs, and Meaning in Context

An average rate of change is never "just a number." Its units are (output units) per (input unit): dollars per month, feet per second, gallons per minute. Its sign tells you the direction.

  • Positive: the output increases on average.

  • Negative: the output decreases on average.

  • Zero: no net change.

When the function gives position and the object moves in one direction, the average rate of change of position is the average speed.

Shrinking the Interval: The Difference Quotient

Back to the speedometer. An average over a long trip hides the details. To see what happens at one moment, we use shorter and shorter intervals.

Write the interval as $[a, a + h]$, where $h > 0$ is its width. Then the average rate of change becomes the difference quotient:

$$\dfrac{f(a + h) - f(a)}{h}.$$

Now see what happens as $h$ gets smaller. For $f(x) = x^2$ at $a = 3$ the difference quotient is $2a + h = 6 + h$:

$h$ 1 0.1 0.01
$\text{AROC}[3, 3 + h]$ 7 6.1 6.01

The values settle toward $6$. That number is the instantaneous rate of change at $x = 3$: the slope of the tangent line, the line the secants approach.

In the graph, the line $y = 4x - 3$ is a long secant through $(1, 1)$ and $(3, 9)$. The line $y = 2x - 1$ is the tangent at $(1, 1)$, the limit of ever-shorter secants.

If a function has $\text{AROC}[a, b] = m$ for every interval, then it is linear with slope $m$. Using the point $(x_1, y_1)$ on its graph, $f(x) = y_1 + m(x - x_1)$.

Applications: Diminishing Returns, Sign Changes, and Symmetry

Diminishing returns. Suppose a tutoring program raises a student's score by $P(h) = \dfrac{40h}{h + 4}$ points after $h$ hours.

A sign change. A rectangular pen is built with 20 ft of fence, with width $x$ and length $10 - x$. Its area is $A(x) = x(10 - x)$.

Symmetry. An odd function satisfies $f(-x) = -f(x)$. For such a function, the average rate on $[-b, -a]$ equals the average rate on $[a, b]$:

$$\dfrac{f(-a) - f(-b)}{-a - (-b)} = \dfrac{-f(a) + f(b)}{b - a} = \dfrac{f(b) - f(a)}{b - a}.$$

Check with $f(x) = x^3$: $\text{AROC}[1, 2] = \dfrac{8 - 1}{1} = 7$ and $\text{AROC}[-2, -1] = \dfrac{-1 - (-8)}{1} = 7$ ✓. For an even function ($f(-x) = f(x)$), the rates have opposite signs: $x^2$ gives $3$ on $[1, 2]$ and $-3$ on $[-2, -1]$.
