Materials Selection

Before you start, make sure you know: The properties of materials (Secondary Year 1)
Before you start, make sure you know: Forces, loads, and stresses (Secondary Year 1)

In the neighborhood, they want to build a bench for the community garden and a new frying pan for the food co-op. Why isn't the pan's handle made of the same metal as the pan, and why isn't the bench in the plaza made of just anything? Choosing the right material is half of the design: every material has properties that make it ideal for one piece and unsuitable for another.

The Properties of Materials

Each property justifies a technical decision: why the handle is made of one material and the pan of another.

Mechanical properties (hardness, elasticity) tell how the material responds to forces. Thermal and electrical properties (conductivity) tell how it behaves with heat and current.

Four properties of materials illustrated with an object: a hammer for hardness, a copper wire for conductivity, a cork stopper that floats for density, and a stretched rubber band for elasticity. hardness (hammer) electric current conductivity (copper wire) water density (cork) at rest stretched elasticity (rubber band)

Common samples in the shop: wood (visible grain, light, insulating), copper (reddish, a very good conductor), acrylic (rigid, transparent), steel (dark gray, heavy, magnetic), and clay or ceramic (hard, insulating, brittle). Careful: not all metals are magnetic; copper and aluminum are not.

Four samples of common workshop materials are presented, numbered from 1 to 4:

  1. A light-toned strip of wood with visible natural grain.

  2. A shiny reddish metal sheet.

  3. A rigid, colorless, transparent sheet.

  4. A dark gray, heavy, magnetic metal bar.

Identify them and suggest an object you could make with each one, justifying your choice with a property of the material.

Choosing Based on Compared Properties

Each object demands a different combination of properties, and the material is chosen by comparing the alternatives.

Besides technical properties, good criteria also include the origin and disposal of the material, the cost, and whether it is available in the region: clay, local wood, bamboo, natural fibers, or recycled PET. A material that can be found nearby and can be reused or recycled harms the community's surroundings less.

Deciding with Technical, Social, and Environmental Criteria

Choosing among several valid options requires comparing and recognizing which disadvantage is being accepted.

Comparison matrix of steel and plastic in weight, strength, and hygiene: the width of each rectangle shows how much the material stands out in that property. weight strength hygiene steel plastic Wider = higher value of the property

A common dilemma: bioplastic or recycled plastic. Bioplastic comes from plant-based raw material, but it doesn't always break down in a landfill and can contaminate regular recycling. Recycled plastic (like PET) reduces waste, but it degrades after several rounds of recycling. You choose by acknowledging the weakness of the option.
