Algebraic fractions

Aoife is working out how long a Dublin Bus journey takes when the speed changes, and her answer is a fraction with $x$ in the denominator. An algebraic fraction such as $\dfrac{x^2-9}{x^2+6x+9}$ is handled in exactly the same way as $\dfrac{10}{15}$: to simplify it, add it or divide it you need to factorise first, just as with numbers you need to know their factors. Everything you learned about factorising is applied here in a single block of working. We will come back to Aoife's journey at the end of the page.

Simplifying by factorising the numerator and denominator

Simplifying an algebraic fraction means cancelling the factors that the numerator and denominator have in common. The essential step, always, is to factorise both of them first.

Step-by-step diagram showing the simplification of an algebraic fraction by factorising the numerator and denominator until the common factor cancels. (x² − 9) / (x² + 6x + 9) (x−3)(x+3) / (x+3)² (x − 3) / (x + 3)

A courier company calculates the shipping cost for $x$ packages using the formula $C(x) = 2x^2 + 10x$ euros. Write the algebraic fraction that represents the average cost per package and simplify it as far as possible.

Note: The average cost is calculated by dividing the total cost $C(x)$ by the number of packages $x$.

In a Christmas exam, Cian simplifies the algebraic fraction $\frac{x^2 - 9}{x^2 - 3x}$ by writing the following on his paper:

$$\frac{x^2 - 9}{x^2 - 3x} = \frac{\cancel{x^2} - 9}{\cancel{x^2} - 3x} = \frac{-9}{-3x} = \frac{3}{x}$$
  1. a) Explain with algebraic rigor why Cian's first step is a serious error: why can't you cross out terms that are being added/subtracted in a fraction? To convince Cian, provide a numerical counterexample by calculating the value of the original fraction and that of his result for $x = 4$.
  2. b) Carry out the correct simplification by first factoring the numerator and the denominator.
  3. c) State for which values of $x$ the original fraction is not defined and check whether those values caused the same problem in Cian's erroneous expression.

Multiplying and dividing algebraic fractions

Just as with numerical fractions: to multiply, multiply numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator; to divide, multiply by the reciprocal fraction. Factorising before multiplying almost always lets you simplify as you go.

An urban logistics company uses drones to deliver packages. The base area of the transport boxes is rectangular and its dimensions, in decimetres, are given by the expressions shown in the image. Calculate the simplified expression representing the total area of the box's base by multiplying both dimensions.

AREA = ? x + 2 x - 1 x² - 1 x

The dimensions are $Largo = \frac{x^2 - 1}{x}$ and $Ancho = \frac{x+2}{x-1}$. Calculate the area of the rectangle by simplifying the product of both fractions.

Addition and subtraction: the lowest common denominator

With the same denominator, you add the numerators without touching the denominator. With different denominators, you need a common denominator, which is found by factorising each denominator and taking the lowest common denominator.

Calculation of the subtraction of two algebraic fractions, finding the lowest common denominator after factorising the denominators. 5/(x+2) − 3/(x²−4) x²−4 = (x−2)(x+2) → LCD = (x−2)(x+2) = [5(x−2) − 3] / [(x−2)(x+2)] = (5x−13)/(x²−4)

Finding unknown constants

Sometimes you are told that two fractions are equal and must find the constants. Put the right-hand side over the common denominator, then equate the numerators: the coefficients of $x$ must match, and so must the constant terms.

In a study on the spread of news on social media, it has been determined that users' response time (in seconds) depends on two variables combined in the following operation:

$$\frac{3x}{x-2} - \frac{x-1}{x+2} - \frac{8}{x^2-4}$$

Perform the operation by putting the fractions over a common denominator and simplify the result to obtain a single algebraic fraction that models this behaviour.

Two cyclists cover the same distance $d$. The first travels at an average speed of $x$ km/h and the second at an average speed of $x+5$ km/h. The difference in time (in hours) it takes them to complete the journey is given by the expression:

$$T(x) = \frac{d}{x} - \frac{d}{x+5}$$

If the distance is constant $d = 100$ km, subtract the algebraic fractions and obtain a single expression relating the time difference to the speed $x$.

Combined operations and complex fractions

When sums, differences, products and brackets are mixed together, you work out what is inside the brackets first and then carry on step by step, just as with numbers.

A complex fraction — one with fractions inside its numerator or denominator — is dealt with by first reducing each level to a single fraction, and dividing at the end.

Diagram of the simplification of a complex fraction, reducing the numerator and denominator to simple fractions and dividing them at the end. 1 − 1/x² 1 + 1/x complex fraction = (x²−1)/x² (x+1)/x with common denominator

Factorising a cubic by grouping

Some numerators and denominators are cubics. Group the terms in pairs, take out the common factor of each pair, then take out the common bracket.

Unknown constant so that a factor divides

If $(x-3)$ is a factor of $x^2+kx-6$, then the expression equals $0$ when $x=3$. Substitute: $9+3k-6=0$, so $k=-1$. Check: $x^2-x-6=(x-3)(x+2)$.

Building a fraction from given factors

To make a fraction that simplifies to $\dfrac{x+2}{x+1}$, multiply the top and bottom by the same extra factor, for example $(x-3)$: $\dfrac{(x+2)(x-3)}{(x+1)(x-3)}$, then expand each if asked.

  1. Its denominator vanishes solely and exclusively for $x = 3$ and for $x = -1$.

  2. The degree of both the numerator and the denominator is 2.

  3. The fraction can be simplified by canceling the common factor $(x - 3)$.

  4. After simplifying it completely, the resulting irreducible expression is $\frac{x + 2}{x + 1}$.
