Work and power

You lift a dumbbell at the gym, push a sledge across the snow, pull yourself up a climbing rope. In all three cases you apply a force and something moves. But in physics "work" does not mean the same as "effort" or "tiredness": it has a very precise definition, and sometimes you get really tired without doing any physical work at all.

Work: force times displacement

Push an empty shopping trolley for 5 metres and then push it loaded with 40 kg over the same distance: even though the distance is identical, the energy you have had to transfer to it is not the same. How can we measure, with a single quantity, how much energy a force transfers over a displacement?

Work is calculated as $W = F \cdot d$, where $F$ is the force and $d$ is the displacement in the direction of the force. You push a moving box with a force of $20\ \text{N}$ and it moves $5\ \text{m}$, as shown in the diagram.

F = 20 N d = 5 m W = ?

What work have you done? Express it in joules ($\text{J}$).

When there is NO work

Two cases of zero work: a force on a wall that does not move (d = 0) and a vertical force on an object that moves horizontally (force perpendicular to the displacement). F wall: d = 0 → W = 0 F d F ⊥ d → W = 0

You push with all your strength against the classroom wall for a minute, and logically it does not move. Then you push a shopping trolley and it moves $3\ \text{m}$. Observe the two situations:

wall F d = 0 m trolley F d = 3 m

In which of the two cases have you done work? Justify your answer using the definition of work.

  1. a) Does your force do work on the suitcase while you walk? Reason your answer thinking about the direction of the force and that of the displacement.
  2. b) At what point during the trip do you actually do work on the suitcase? Give an example.

Power: how quickly work is done

Two people of the same weight climb three floors by the stairs: both do exactly the same work against gravity, but one walks up in two minutes and the other runs up in fifteen seconds. What physical quantity measures the rate at which that energy is transferred?

Two people climb the same stairs: one walking up in 2 minutes and the other running up in 15 seconds; they do the same work, but the one who runs develops more power, P = W/t. Walking Running same work W 2 min = 120 s 15 s lower power higher power W (J) ÷ t (s) = P (W)
