Magmatism and igneous rocks

A volcano is simply the surface outlet of a process that begins much earlier, deep underground: a solid rock melts, a magma rises and a new rock forms as it cools. The tectonic setting in which each step takes place determines what kind of magma, volcano and rock result.

Before you start, make sure you know: Plate tectonics (4th ESO)

Why a rock melts: magmatism

The Earth's mantle is at temperatures of over $1000\text{ }^\circ\mathrm{C}$ and yet it is almost entirely solid because of the tremendous pressure it is under; even so, in certain places molten liquid rock wells up. Under what precise physical conditions can a solid rock deep underground cross the threshold and melt?

Three cross-sections of the mantle showing how magma forms: a rising hot plume (increase in temperature), the mantle rising beneath a mid-ocean ridge (decrease in pressure) and the water released by a subducting plate (input of water). Hot spot Ridge Subduction mantle ↑T ↓P +H₂O

The three settings of magmatism

If you collect lava samples at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, in the Chilean Andes and in the Canary Islands, you will find that their density, colour and chemical composition are completely different. Why does plate tectonics fundamentally determine the composition of the magma and the type of rock that forms?

Cross-section of the lithosphere and mantle showing the three settings of magmatism: a mid-ocean ridge with decompression melting and basaltic magma, a hot spot with a mantle plume beneath an intraplate volcanic island, and a subduction zone where the water released by the sinking plate melts the mantle and feeds a volcano of andesitic magma. 1 Mid-ocean ridge 2 Hot spot 3 Subduction zone basaltic magma intraplate andesitic magma oceanic crust oceanic lithosphere continental crust melting by decompression melting of the mantle water released mantle plume thermal anomaly mantle

Magma viscosity and type of eruption

In 2018, the lava from Kilauea (Hawaii) advanced like a river that could be approached without immediate danger of an explosion, whereas in 1980 Mount St Helens blew away half a mountainside in seconds. What physical property of magma determines whether a volcano pours out calm rivers or bursts in an explosive catastrophe?

Cross-section of a shield volcano, broad with gentle slopes, formed by fluid basaltic flows with gentle gas release, next to a steep conical stratovolcano of alternating layers of lava and pyroclasts, with an eruption column of ash and gases and ejection of pyroclasts. gentle gas release fluid flow successive flows column of ash and gases pyroclasts layers of lava and pyroclasts magma chamber shield volcano (effusive) basaltic magma: low silica, fluid stratovolcano (explosive) felsic magma: rich in silica, viscous
