Inverse Functions

You are on a family trip in Chicago and the weather app says $50^\circ$F. Your science class uses Celsius. There is a formula that turns Celsius into Fahrenheit, $F = \tfrac{9}{5}C + 32$. Can you run it backward to turn Fahrenheit into Celsius? A function that undoes another function is called its inverse function.

Undoing a Function

A function takes an input and gives an output. An inverse function takes that output and gives back the original input.

Take $f(x) = 2x + 3$. Here is a table for $f$, and then the same table with inputs and outputs swapped.

$x$ 0 1 2 3
$f(x)$ 3 5 7 9
$x$ 3 5 7 9
$f^{-1}(x)$ 0 1 2 3

The second table is the inverse. Every ordered pair $(a, b)$ of $f$ becomes $(b, a)$ in $f^{-1}$.

One-to-one functions

A parabola crossed by a horizontal line at two points with the same y-value, showing that the parabola is not one-to-one. y = k same y, two different x: not one-to-one

A full parabola fails the test, because a horizontal line cuts it once on each side of the vertex. We will fix that later by restricting the domain.

You can find a single value of an inverse without finding a formula for it. Just solve $f(x) = \text{the number}$.

Finding the Inverse Algebraically

To find a formula for $f^{-1}$, you reverse the roles of input and output.

The two lines in the graph above are $f(x) = 2x + 7$ and its inverse. Notice that they mirror each other across the line $y = x$. We will come back to that.

When $x$ appears in more than one place, collect all the $y$-terms on one side and factor out $y$.

Checking an Inverse by Composition

Is a candidate really the inverse? Test it by composing. If $g$ undoes $f$, then doing $g$ first and $f$ after should bring you right back to $x$.

Diagram: x goes through g, then f, and comes back as x, so f of g of x equals x. x g g(x) f f(g(x)) = x

Functions that are their own inverse

A function with $f^{-1} = f$ is called self-inverse. For these functions $f(f(x)) = x$.

Restricting the Domain

A parabola fails the Horizontal Line Test, so $f(x) = x^2 + 4x + 1$ has no inverse function on all real numbers. But we can cut the graph in half at the vertex. Each half is one-to-one, and each half has its own inverse.

Complete the square to find the vertex: $f(x) = (x + 2)^2 - 3$, so the vertex is $(-2, -3)$.

If we had restricted to $x \le -2$ instead, we would choose the negative root, $f^{-1}(x) = -2 - \sqrt{x + 3}$.
