Sketching Graphs by Function Type

Emma streams a video-game tournament. The number of viewers, in thousands per hour, $t$ hours after the stream starts is modeled by $V(t) = \dfrac{30t}{t^2+9}$. When is the audience biggest? Does it ever drop to zero for good? On the no-calculator part of the AP exam you can't open Desmos, so you have to read the answer from the function itself. This page gives you one checklist that works for every function, plus the shortcuts and traps of each family.

The sketching checklist

Every graph study follows the same order. Each step uses information from the earlier ones, so don't skip around.

The seven steps of curve sketching in order: domain, symmetry, intercepts, asymptotes, first derivative, second derivative, sketch. 1 Domain 2 Symmetry 3 Intercepts 4 Asymptotes 5 Use f′ 6 Use f″ 7 Sketch
  1. Domain. Where is $f$ defined?

  2. Symmetry. Is $f$ even or odd?

  3. Intercepts. Find $f(0)$ and solve $f(x) = 0$ when you can.

  4. Asymptotes. Vertical, horizontal and slant (oblique), using limits.

  5. First derivative. Find where $f$ is increasing or decreasing and locate the relative extrema.

  6. Second derivative. Find where $f$ is concave up or concave down and locate the points of inflection.

  7. Sketch. Draw asymptotes as dashed lines, plot the key points, and connect them using the shape each interval requires.

Symmetry halves your work: study $x \ge 0$ and reflect.

Rational functions: reading the asymptotes

Rational functions use every tool on the checklist: a restricted domain and up to three kinds of asymptotes.

When a problem gives a model like $P(t) = \dfrac{40t}{t+2}$, the horizontal asymptote has a meaning: $\lim_{t\to\infty} P(t)$ is the long-run value the quantity approaches but never has to reach.
