Before you start, make sure you know: Operations with decimal numbers (Math 7)

The Sun is about $93{,}000{,}000$ miles from Earth. A flu virus is about $0.0000001$ meter across. Counting zeros is slow, and it is easy to lose one. Scientists write these numbers with powers of 10 instead, and by the end of this page you will too.

Integer exponents

A power is a short way to write repeated multiplication. In $a^n$, the base $a$ is multiplied by itself $n$ times, and $n$ is the exponent.

$$2^4 = 2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 2 = 16$$

A power with exponent 2 is a square and with exponent 3 is a cube. Here is why:

A 3 by 3 grid of unit squares showing that 3 squared equals 9. 3² = 3 × 3 = 9

Try the slider and watch the exponent count the factors:

An odd exponent keeps a negative base negative: $(-3)^3 = -27$. An even exponent makes it positive: $(-3)^2 = 9$.

Zero and negative exponents

Look at the pattern. Each step down in the exponent divides the value by 2:

Power $2^3$ $2^2$ $2^1$ $2^0$ $2^{-1}$ $2^{-2}$
Value 8 4 2 1 $\tfrac{1}{2}$ $\tfrac{1}{4}$

To keep the pattern going, we define:

For example, $5^0 = 1$, $10^{-1} = \tfrac{1}{10}$, and $\dfrac{1}{3^2} = 3^{-2}$. For a fraction base, flip it: $\left(\tfrac{2}{3}\right)^{-2} = \left(\tfrac{3}{2}\right)^{2} = \tfrac{9}{4}$.

Properties of exponents

Why does $2^3 \cdot 2^4 = 2^7$? Just write out the factors:

The product 2 cubed times 2 to the fourth written out as seven factors of 2, which equals 2 to the seventh. 2³ · 2⁴ (2·2·2) · (2·2·2·2) 7 factors of 2 = 2⁷

The same kind of reasoning gives every rule below. These work for any nonzero base, and the exponents can be negative.

Use the properties of powers to simplify the following expressions and leave them as a single power. You do not need to calculate the final result, just express the resulting power.

Remember that:

  • To multiply powers with the same base, we add the exponents.

  • To divide powers with the same base, we subtract the exponents.

  • To raise a power to another power, we multiply the exponents.

Rewriting with a common base

The product and quotient rules need the same base. When the bases differ, break them into prime factors, or into powers of the same number.

Four numbers rewritten as powers of a common base: 8 equals 2 cubed, 9 equals 3 squared, 27 equals 3 cubed, and one third equals 3 to the negative one. 8 = 2³ 9 = 3² 27 = 3³ 1/3 = 3⁻¹ Pick one base, then use the rules.

The same trick solves exponential equations. If $b^x = b^y$, then $x = y$.

Simplify the following algebraic expression using the properties of powers. What is scientific notation?

Powers of 10 are easy to work with: $10^3 = 1{,}000$, $10^6 = 1{,}000{,}000$, $10^{-2} = 0.01$. That makes them perfect for very big and very small numbers.

Some problems call this standard form. On this page it always means the $a \times 10^n$ format above.

Travel from an atom to the Milky Way. Every jump is a multiplication by 10:

  • Big numbers have a positive exponent: $3{,}894{,}215 \approx 3.9 \times 10^{6}$.

  • Small numbers (between 0 and 1) have a negative exponent: $0.00045 = 4.5 \times 10^{-4}$.

Converting back and forth

The exponent tells you how many places the decimal point moves.

The decimal point moves left for a positive exponent and right for a negative exponent when writing a number in scientific notation. 3 8 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 . 8 places left → 10⁸ = 3.8 × 10⁸ 0 . 0 0 0 0 7 2 5 places right → 10⁻⁵ = 7.2 × 10⁻⁵

Comparing numbers in scientific notation

Look at the exponent first, because it is the boss. Only when the exponents are equal do you compare the first factors.

  • $9.9 \times 10^{4} < 1.1 \times 10^{5}$, because $10^{4} < 10^{5}$ (even though $9.9 > 1.1$).

  • $3.2 \times 10^{-6} > 3.2 \times 10^{-8}$, because $-6 > -8$.

  • $3.2 \times 10^{5} > 3.1 \times 10^{5}$, same exponent, so compare $3.2 > 3.1$.

When something doubles over and over, the exponent counts the doublings. A bacteria culture starts with $10^3$ cells and doubles every hour. After $n$ hours it has $10^3 \cdot 2^n$ cells. After 20 hours that is $10^3 \cdot 2^{20} \approx 10^3 \cdot 1.05 \times 10^{6} \approx 1.05 \times 10^{9}$ cells. Drag the exponent to see how fast powers of 2 grow:
