Identifying species

You find an insect in the playground and you don't know what it is. How can you find out without having to ask an expert every time?

The concept of species

When a mastiff is crossed with a poodle, the puppies are fertile, but when a donkey is crossed with a mare, the result is a sterile mule: what biological criterion decides whether or not two living things belong to the same basic group?

A Great Dane and a Chihuahua, two dog breeds of very different sizes, breed and have a fertile puppy, which in turn will be able to have young: that is why they belong to the same species. same species, even with different breeds Great Dane dog A × cross Chihuahua dog B fertile puppy will be able to have young in turn

Using the fertile offspring criterion, discuss whether these pairs belong to the same species: (a) two dogs of different breeds that have puppies; (b) two sparrows with slightly different plumage that interbreed and have chicks; (c) an Iberian lynx and a domestic cat, which do not interbreed in nature.

The dichotomous key

Flow chart of a dichotomous key that guides the identification of an organism through successive questions with two options. 1. Does it have legs? no yes earthworm 2. Does it have wings? yes no butterfly cat

The scientific name

The bird Erithacus rubecula is called petirrojo in Spanish, paporroibo in Galician, robin in English and Rotkehlchen in German: how do scientists all over the world manage to name an organism without depending on the local language?

Structure of binomial nomenclature with the example of Homo sapiens: the first word is the genus, with an initial capital letter, and the second is the specific epithet, in lower case. Homo sapiens genus (Capital) specific epithet (lower case)

Field guides and respect for living things

In one square metre of urban lawn only two kinds of plants and a few insects live, whereas in a nearby wood hundreds of living things exist side by side: how can we record this natural richness without disturbing the organisms that make it up?

Three tools for identifying living things: a dichotomous key with decision branches ending in different leaves, an open field guide with the photo, size and habitat of a plant, and a phone that recognises a plant from a photo. 1 2 Dichotomous key Field guide Phone app exact steps photos and habitat in seconds

Observing and respecting animals

Many animals can experience sensations and states such as pain or well-being: they are sentient beings. Feeling is not simply the same as responding to a stimulus: a plant grows towards the light, but that does not show that it has an experience of pain like an animal.

Sequential diagram of the four stages of responsible fieldwork: observe, identify without harming, record and respect. Observe identifywithout harming record respect

Back to the beginning: To identify that insect by yourself, observe its anatomical features carefully and follow the questions of a dichotomous key or compare it with a photographic field guide, always without capturing it or causing it harm.
