Parameters of a Normal Distribution
A short-video app reports that teens spend about 40 minutes a day watching reels. Is 70 minutes a lot? The mean alone can't tell you. You also need to know how spread out the times are. These two numbers, $\mu$ and $\sigma$, completely define a normal distribution, and in this section you will read them, compare them, and even work backward to find them.
Notation and Parameters
The mean $\mu$ tells you where the curve is centered. The standard deviation $\sigma$ tells you how spread out it is. Both are measured in the same units as the data.

A courier company has analyzed the time it takes its delivery drivers to deliver a package from the moment they leave the warehouse. They have found that this time follows a normal distribution with a mean of $25$ minutes and a standard deviation of $4$ minutes. Identify the statistical parameters of this distribution and write it using the abbreviated mathematical notation $X \sim N(\mu, \sigma)$.

Symmetry and the Center of the Curve
A normal curve is a perfect mirror image on both sides of the vertical line $x = \mu$. That single fact lets you find $\mu$ from a graph and answer many probability questions without a table.
To read $\mu$ from a graph, find the $x$-value under the peak, or the midpoint of any two points at the same height.

The scores obtained on a practice AP exam follow a normal distribution $X \sim N(5,8; 1,2)$. Without using the normal distribution table for this section, and based on the symmetry properties of the Gaussian bell curve, if we know that $P(X \leq k) = 0,72$, calculate with justification:
- a) $P(X > k)$
- b) $P(X \leq 5,8)$
- c) $P(5,8 - (k - 5,8) \leq X \leq k)$

The time it takes a student to complete a standardized math exam follows a normal distribution. It is known that the mean time is $70$ minutes. If the probability of a student finishing the exam in less than $60$ minutes is the same as the probability of taking more than $k$ minutes, and it is known that the variance of the distribution is $25$, determine the value of $k$ using the properties of the parameters of the normal distribution.
Comparing Normal Curves
When two normal distributions describe the same kind of data, their parameters tell you which one is higher on average and which one is more consistent.

Imagine you are comparing the precision of two machines that cut wooden slats. Machine 1 cuts with a distribution $N(100, 0.1)$ and Machine 2 with a distribution $N(100, 0.5)$ (in inches).
-
Which of the two machines is more precise?
-
Relate the concept of "precision" to the value of the standard deviation $\sigma$ in a normal distribution.
The Standard Normal and Probabilities
Every normal distribution is a stretched and shifted copy of one special normal, so one table or one calculator command handles them all.
Why does this work? Subtracting $\mu$ moves the center to $0$, and dividing by $\sigma$ measures distances in units of $\sigma$. The area under the curve doesn't change, so $P(X \le x) = P(Z \le z)$.

- b) If brand A has a distribution $N(25000, 2000)$ and brand B has $N(28000, 3500)$, calculate the probability that a brand A bulb lasts longer than the mean lifespan of brand B.
Middle Intervals and the Empirical Rule
How far from the mean do most of the values lie? The empirical rule answers that with $\sigma$ as the ruler.
Some problems call a middle interval like this a characteristic interval. It is just the interval centered at the mean that contains a given percent of the values.

In an e-sports championship, the score obtained by players in a qualifying phase follows a normal distribution $N(\mu, \sigma)$. The organizing committee has established that the characteristic interval centered on the mean for $95,44\%$ of the players is $[1250, 1750]$ points.
-
Calculate the mean and variance of the players' scores.
-
If qualifying for the final requires being in the "top" $5\%$ of the best players, what is the minimum score required?
Percentiles: Finding the Value
Sometimes you know the percent and need the cutoff value: "the top $10\%$ get a prize." This is the reverse of finding a probability.
Here are some useful left areas and their $z$-values. For a left area below $0.5$, use the same $z$ with a negative sign.

- b) If a minimum depth of $x$ inches is required to open a black diamond trail, and it is known that this trail is open on $70\%$ of the days in January, what is this minimum depth $x$?
Finding a Missing Parameter
What if the probability is given but $\mu$ or $\sigma$ is missing? The same equation $x = \mu + z\sigma$ still works. You just solve for the unknown.

Two Unknowns, Two Clues
When both $\mu$ and $\sigma$ are unknown, you need two pieces of information. Each one gives an equation, and together they form a system you can solve by elimination.

Linear Transformations of a Normal Variable

A sustainable courier company uses electric scooters for its deliveries. The battery range of these scooters follows a normal distribution with a mean of $60$ miles. It is known that the probability of a scooter having a range greater than $75$ miles is $0,0668$. Due to a software update, the range of all scooters increases by $10\%$ plus a fixed extra of $2$ miles. Determine the original standard deviation of the batteries and the new parameters (mean and standard deviation) after the software update.
Summary
Back to the start: if teens' daily reel time is $N(40, 15)$ minutes, then $70$ minutes has $z = \frac{70 - 40}{15} = 2$. Only about $2.3\%$ of teens watch that much, so $70$ minutes is quite a lot. The mean alone could not tell you that. You needed $\sigma$.
