Techniques for separating mixtures

Grandma has mixed up chickpeas and lentils in the same drawer: since they are different sizes, a colander is enough to separate them. Each time you make coffee in a drip coffee maker, you use a separation technique too. Each mixture is separated with a different technique, depending on what makes its components different from each other.

Filtration and decantation

When we pour sand into water or mix oil with vinegar in a salad dressing, we can clearly see that the parts do not blend together: how can we mechanically separate a solid suspended in a liquid, or two liquids that refuse to combine?

Two separation techniques. On the left, filtration: a mixture of water and sand passes through a funnel with filter paper. The sand is held back and the filtered water drips into a flask. On the right, decantation: in a beaker left to stand, the less dense oil forms a layer on top of the denser water, and is then carefully poured off. filtration filter paper water with sand sand (retained) funnel filtrate (water) decantation oil less dense water denser left to stand: two layers by density then carefully pour off the top layer

Sieving and magnetic separation

Evaporation and distillation

Seawater from the Gulf of Mexico looks like pure water at first glance, but if we let a drop dry in the sun, a white crust of salt is left behind: how can we separate the components of a homogeneous solution, and how can we also recover the liquid before it is lost into the air?

Animation of an evaporating dish where the liquid level goes down as vapor rises and the salt is left at the bottom, and of a distillation set-up where the vapor travels along the tube, condenses in the condenser and drips into the collecting container, which gradually fills. evaporation distillation

Salt pans work the same way as simple evaporation: sun and wind evaporate the water from shallow pools and a layer of salt is left behind. Back to the start: coffee filters and colanders use filtration and sieving, while evaporation recovers dissolved solids like salt.
