Laboratory equipment and safety rules

You need to measure about 25 mL of water for your science fair project. On the shelf there is a beaker, a graduated cylinder and an Erlenmeyer flask. Choosing the right instrument — and knowing how to use it safely — is the first skill of any scientist.

Measuring instruments

Basic laboratory equipment: a beaker with approximate markings, a graduated cylinder with a fine scale and a meniscus, an Erlenmeyer flask with a wide base and narrow neck, and a thermometer with a scale in degrees Celsius. 50 100 150 mL meniscus 100 50 0 °C beaker graduated cylinder Erlenmeyer flask thermometer approximate volume accurate volume swirl without splashing temperature

Using instruments well

Choosing the right instrument is only half the job. You also have to use it so that the number you get can be trusted.

Heating and the Bunsen burner

Hazard pictograms (GHS)

This diagram shows the safe sequence when you handle a chemical:

Sequence when handling a chemical: a bottle with a hazard pictogram (skull and crossbones), reading the full label with a magnifying glass, and a checklist with safety goggles for following the protocol. Hazard symbol Read the label Follow the protocol

Chemical products carry GHS hazard pictograms: standardized symbols in a red diamond that warn of the danger at a glance. The label also has a signal word ("Danger" or "Warning"), and a safety data sheet (SDS) gives the full details. Read all three together.
