Mixture Separation Techniques

At a tortilla shop, a handful of beans got mixed up with lentils by accident, and Mrs. Regina separates them with a strainer with medium-sized holes. Each mixture is separated with a different method, and the key is always the same: find a physical property in which the components are different.

Filtration and Decanting

When we pour sand into water, or let broth sit with the fat on top, we see that the parts do not blend together. How can we separate a solid that did not dissolve, or two liquids that do not mix?

Two separation techniques. On the left, filtration: a mixture of water and sand passes through a funnel with filter paper. The sand is retained and the filtered water drips into a flask. On the right, decanting: in a beaker at rest, the less dense oil forms a layer on top of the denser water. filtration filter paper water with sand sand (retained) funnel filtrate (water) decanting oil less dense water denser at rest: two layers by density then the top one is removed

Sieving and Magnetic Separation

What if both components are solids? Then we have to look for another difference: the size of the particles or whether they are magnetic.

Two separation methods. On the left, a mesh sieve retains the large grains and lets the small ones pass, falling into a container. On the right, a horseshoe magnet attracts the iron filings and the sand stays in the tray. large grains: stay behind sieve grains small: pass through N S magnet filings of iron sand: stays in the tray Sieving the small passes; the large stays behind Magnetic separation the magnet attracts only the iron

Evaporation and Distillation

If you leave a drop of seawater in the sun, a white crust of salt is left behind. How can we separate the components of a homogeneous mixture, and how can we also recover the liquid before it is lost into the air?

Animation of an evaporating dish where the liquid level drops while vapor rises and salt is left at the bottom, and of a distillation setup where the vapor travels along the tube, condenses in the condenser, and drips into the collecting container, which gradually fills. evaporation distillation

Crystallization, Extraction, Sublimation, and Chromatography

Some mixtures cannot be solved with the earlier techniques. Four more take advantage of different properties: solubility, the direct change from solid to gas, and the speed with which a substance travels along a piece of paper.

Choosing the Right Technique

Four mixtures and the technique that separates them: filtration of an undissolved solid with a funnel and filter paper, decanting of two immiscible liquids with a separatory funnel, sieving of solids of different sizes with a sieve, and evaporation of a dissolved solid by heating a dish. undissolved solid immiscible liquids solids of different sizes dissolved solid filtration decanting sieving evaporation

Back to the beginning: Regina separates beans and lentils with a strainer because their sizes are different, that is, she is using sieving.
