Getting to Know the Fields and Their Activities
In an auto parts plant in Guanajuato, a machine warns on its own that it is going to break down before it fails. Who built it, who connects it to the network, who analyzes its data, and who keeps someone from attacking the system? It is not one person or one career: it is several technology and digital fields working together. On this page you will learn to recognize them, see what each one does, and choose a pathway to reach them.
The six fields and their activities
A technology and digital field is an area of work with its own problems, tools, and professional profiles. Each one answers a different question:
| Field | Question it answers | Main activity |
|---|---|---|
| Artificial intelligence (AI) | How do we make a system learn? | Building models that learn from data |
| Internet of Things (IoT) | How do we connect objects to the network? | Connecting sensors and everyday objects to the network |
| Cybersecurity | How do we protect information? | Protecting systems against attacks |
| Data science | What do the data tell us? | Analyzing large volumes of data to make decisions |
| Robotics | How do we make a machine act in the physical world? | Designing and programming machines that carry out physical tasks |
| Computer engineering | How are a computing system and its software designed? | Designing computing systems and the software that makes them work |

Match each tech-digital field with the activity that corresponds to it: artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity, data science, robotics and computer engineering. Activities: protecting a company's systems against attacks; building models that learn from data; analyzing large volumes of data to make decisions; connecting sensors and everyday objects to the network; designing and programming machines that perform physical tasks; designing the computing systems and the software that makes them work.
Identifying the field in a case
To recognize the main field of a situation, look for what the system does, not which device it uses.
A third case: a bank detects cloned cards by comparing purchase patterns. Here there are two fields. The model that learns how each customer normally shops and flags anything unusual is AI, but the goal is to protect customers from fraud, so the main field is closer to cybersecurity. When in doubt, justify your choice and mention the supporting field.
Identify the main field in each case and justify your choice: a moisture sensor in a cornfield warns the producer's cell phone when it is time to water; a city analyzes…

Industry 4.0: when the fields combine
It is called "4.0" because it is considered the fourth major stage: 1) the steam engine, 2) electricity and mass production, 3) automation with computers, 4) the connected and intelligent plant.
No single field does it alone. Imagine the auto parts plant in Guanajuato:
This is how the work flows: the IoT sensors on thousands of machines send measurements; data science organizes and analyzes them; an AI model learns which vibration signals a failure and warns ahead of time; the robots weld and assemble with precision; cybersecurity keeps anyone from stopping the line or stealing its data; and computer engineering designs the software and systems that tie everything together.
This combination creates new profiles (industrial data analyst, predictive maintenance specialist, industrial cybersecurity officer) and transforms existing ones: a maintenance technician now also reads dashboards and alerts, and someone who operates a machine supervises a robot.

The diagram shows the fields that come together in an auto parts plant in Guanajuato adopting Industry 4.0. Identify which field the satellite marked with «?» belongs to —it stands for the thousands of machine sensors connected to the network— and explain how the other fields in the diagram combine in the plant and which job profiles that combination creates or transforms.
Pathways to reach these fields
There is no single path. Two common pathways toward data science or other fields:
| Pathway A: technical | Pathway B: general and university | |
|---|---|---|
| High school | Technical, with a programming specialization | General or Colegio de Bachilleres |
| Afterward | Technical degree or university technical associate degree (TSU) | Bachelor's degree or engineering degree at a public university (UNAM, IPN, state universities) |
| Time | Shorter to start working | Longer, with greater depth in math |
| Cost | Low at public schools | Low at public universities, but transportation and materials count |
| Requirements | Basic programming since high school | Each institution's admission exam and a strong math foundation |
To compare pathways from your own situation, check four things: time, total cost (tuition, transportation, computer, and internet), requirements (math and programming), and support (federal and state scholarships, mentorships, preparatory courses).
Who gets into these careers and who stays in them is not by chance: there are gender and socioeconomic gaps that can be named, measured, and reduced. We will look at them in the next pages of the chapter.

There are several routes into data science: a technological high school with a programming specialization followed by a technical degree, or a general high school and then a public university. Compare two possible routes from your own context (time, cost, math and programming requirements) and point out which supports or scholarships exist in your state for each one.
Back to the beginning: the machine that warns before it fails is the result of IoT (sensors), data science (analysis), AI (prediction), robotics, cybersecurity, and computer engineering working together in an Industry 4.0 plant.
