Nitrogen compounds

The smell of fish that is not fresh, the painkiller in the medicine cabinet and the fibres of a climbing rope in the Wicklow Mountains have something in common: they all contain nitrogen as part of an organic functional group. Amines, amides and nitriles are the three nitrogen families you will learn to name in this section.

Amines: the amino group

When fish or meat decomposes, it gives off volatile nitrogen-containing substances with a very characteristic, penetrating smell: how are these molecules, formally derived from ammonia, named and represented?

Ball-and-stick models of ammonia and methylamine: when one hydrogen of NH₃ is replaced by a methyl group, CH₃–NH₂ is obtained, a primary amine with the amino group –NH₂. N H H H H replaced H → CH₃ substitution C N H H H H H methyl group –CH₃ amino group –NH₂ NH₃ ammonia CH₃–NH₂ methylamine In general: R–NH₂ → primary amine

Polyfunctional molecules: amino acids and polyamides

The proteins in your muscles are made up of amino acids, building blocks that contain both an acidic and a basic group: what criterion is followed to name a molecule when two different functional groups are present?

Full structural formula of glycine, 2-aminoethanoic acid: the amino group (–NH₂) and the carboxyl group (–COOH) both appear in the same molecule. The carboxyl group gives the suffix of the name and the amino group gives the prefix with a locant. amino group (–NH₂) carboxyl group (–COOH) H H N C H H C O O H 2 1 Numbering: the carboxyl carbon is C-1 2-aminoethanoic acid prefix with locant chain: 2 C principal suffix

When many small molecules are joined by amide links ($-\text{CO-NH}-$), a polyamide is formed: the nylon of technical ropes (made from a diacid and a diamine) and the proteins in your muscles (made from amino acids) are examples, with the amide link repeated thousands of times.

Urea, $\text{CO(NH}_2\text{)}_2$, has a carbonyl group with two $-\text{NH}_2$ groups attached, so it can be seen as a diamide of carbonic acid, $\text{HO-CO-OH}$, with both $-\text{OH}$ replaced by $-\text{NH}_2$. Its molar mass is $12 + 16 + 2(14 + 2) = 60\ \text{g/mol}$, and the nitrogen is $\dfrac{28}{60} \times 100 = 47\%$ by mass.

To audit products at home, read the label, identify the functional group ($-\text{OH}$, $-\text{C=O}$, $-\text{NH}_2$, $-\text{CONH}_2$ or none), then write the condensed structural formula and name it using the rules above.

Two more ideas help with paracetamol and caffeine. An $-\text{OH}$ group on a benzene ring is a hydroxyl group (a phenol), and an amide can be N-substituted, $-\text{NH-CO-R}$, with a carbon group on the nitrogen. Alkaloids are nitrogen-containing compounds from plants with physiological effects, such as caffeine.

Unit challenge. How does organic structure determine the properties of the products you use every day? Become a chemical auditor in your home.

  1. IUPAC inventory: Find three commercial products at home whose labels contain, respectively: a hydrocarbon (e.g., butane or paraffin alkanes), an oxygenated compound (e.g., ethanol or propanone), and a nitrogenous compound (e.g., urea or amines in cosmetics). Write their condensed structural formula and their official IUPAC systematic name.

  2. Home experiment: Carefully place a drop ($V \approx 0.05 \pm 0.01\text{ mL}$) of rubbing alcohol and another of acetone-based nail polish remover onto a clean, non-absorbent surface. Measure the time for complete evaporation using your phone's stopwatch ($t \pm 0.2\text{ s}$), performing $3$ repetitions for each liquid at room temperature. Work in a well-ventilated area, away from flames, sparks or hot surfaces, use minimal amounts, avoid inhaling the vapours and contact with skin and eyes, and do it under adult supervision.

  3. Data processing and comparison: Record the measurements in a table, calculating the mean value and its absolute uncertainty. Look up the molar mass and boiling point of the hydrocarbon from step 1 and of the two liquids from the experiment (ethanol and propanone) in the official NIST Chemistry WebBook portal. Plot a graph of boiling point versus molar mass and write a brief report explaining the observed trends based on polarity and intermolecular bonds.

Evaluation criteria:

  • Rigorous accuracy in the formulation and IUPAC nomenclature of the three organic families.

  • Appropriate processing of experimental data (means, uncertainties, clear table, and graph).

  • Coherent scientific justification linking functional chemical structure to volatility and NIST data.
